ORONDO — Thursday afternoon lightning sparked a fire that quickly grew to 1,000 acres overnight near Daroga State Park north of Orondo.

The Auvil Canyon Fire was burning in grasses and scattered timber on private property, and was moving toward the bluff and away from homes Friday morning, said Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal.

Precautionary evacuation advisories remained in place this morning along Highway 97 and in the Desert Canyon area.

State Department of Natural Resources fire crews were on their way to assist local fire districts in battling the blaze this morning, said Jim Duck of the Central Washington Interagency Communications Center.

A second lightning fire reported just north of Emerson Acres near Chelan was two to three acres and mostly contained by this morning, Duck said.

Nine other lightning strikes were recorded but have so far not started fires, said a spokesperson for the management team overseeing several wildfires in Chelan County.
