Great Northern’s ‘Old 1147’ is a chugger with a past

“This engine pulled the longest train ever to come off the W-O Line.”

That was the quote from the retired Great Northern engineer, Tom Cannon, when he dedicated “old 1147” to the City of Wenatchee in 1956.

Her record on the W-O (Wenatchee-Oroville) line was 136 cars, Cannon said. She also had worked on snow service on the mountain segment around the long tunnel through Stevens Pass.

The dedication was a big occasion, chaired by Leman Johnson of the park…
