Chocolate and beer: What’s not to love?

As Valentine’s Day approaches, our thoughts turn to love — and invariably, to chocolate. Chocolate in all its many forms has great appeal as a gustatory end in itself, and it’s also often paired with red wine these days, as many wineries stage wine and chocolate events this time of year.

But as the owner of a winery myself, I have to admit that the best pairings of chocolate with an alcoholic beverage are most often not with wine at all, but with beer instead — and specifically, with dark beers such as porters and stouts.
