A horizon aflame and a rain of burning embers are great motivators. Even so, congratulations are due to the homeowners at Forest Ridge and the Forest Ridge Wildfire Coalition, named by the National Fire Protection Association as one of the five most effective communities in the country in its efforts to reduce the risk of wildfire.
The 100-home subdivision at the head of the Squilchuck was recognized for its efforts to reduce the fire danger to structures, through wise landscaping and maintenance, construction material, building design and use, as recommended through the Firewise program. It can be an example to all who live on the urban fringe and in the woods, who will inevitably face fire, sooner or later. The firewise residents of Forest Ridge know this well, and their homes are safer through their own efforts. Forest dwellers, take note.
