The Washington Legislature convenes soon for a short interim session, and in budgetary terms it could be smooth sailing. Based on revenue projections, for the first time in years there is no need to debate neither tax hikes nor spending cuts of any size.

Enjoy a brief bipartisan respite, for it is merely a brief delay. In a year we will await the trend’s inevitable result — a string of elected officials vowing their budget priorities will best serve the state and prepare its children for the future, while quietly ignoring the renewed erosion of state support for higher education and the grinding economic effects that brings.
