Meddie Lucille “Lucy” Berglund

Wenatchee, WA

Meddie Lucille “Lucy” Berglund, 92, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014. Lucy was born on March 11, 1921, in Melbourne, AK to James Houston and Lydia Cooper. Lucy was close with her sisters and enjoyed singing with her sister, Audrey, in the church choir. Following her schooling, Lucy worked at Brittany’s Restaurant in Memphis, TN. She married Billy Dew and had one son, Jerry. Lucy moved to Wenatchee in 1942 to join her brother and sisters and their families. Lucy first worked at The Roundhouse for the railroad. She later worked at McKenzie’s Cafe, eventually purchasing it in the late 1950’s. Lucy met Frank Berglund, who worked across the street at Wells & Wade. They married and operated McKenzie’s Cafe until the early 1970’s, when they then retired and moved to Spokane. There, Lucy enjoyed growing tomatoes and canning from her large backyard garden and was active with the Lion’s Club. Lucy returned to Wenatchee in the mid-1980’s to help care for her sister, Audrey and worked part-time as a caregiver. Lucy loved to bowl and was often found at the bowling alley where she enjoyed competing on many teams throughout the years. She cherished those times and was fond of sharing her numerous bowling trophies with friends and family. Lucy also loved to have fun gambling at casinos across the northwest with her friend, Ruth and going to the horse races. Lucy was always known for her kindness and willingness to help others. She was also known as the cool, edgy aunt, because she always had the latest fashions and trendy items and loved to share them with her nieces and nephews.

Lucy is survived by her son, Jerry Dew of Wenatchee; sister, Merlene Williams; grandsons, Mike Dew and Dylan Dew of St. Louis, MO; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Dew and John Dew; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, who will miss her smile and one-liners very much! Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, JL Cooper, Floyd Cooper, Edith Dowdle, Audrey Hartney and Arlis Cooper; and husband, Frank Berglund.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014, from Noon to 2:00 p.m. with Memorial Services to follow at Jones & Jones~Betts Memorial Chapel in Wenatchee.
