There are several facilities for the homeless in the Wenatchee area, all important, but if one is crucial it may be the Bruce Transitional Living facilities, better known as the Bruce Hotel. Its 37 rooms can accommodate men, women, couples and families with children from infants to teens. Families aren’t divided among different facilities — they get their own room. A trained staff offers counseling and assistance. The Bruce is busy, usually full with a waiting list.
Losing The Bruce would be a blow. It was especially troubling last week to learn a primary source of Bruce funding had been pulled away. The Regional Support Network, which distributes state mental health funding in Chelan and Douglas counties, announced it would cancel its contract with the Women’s Resource Center, which owns and operates The Bruce. It means the loss of $85,000, 15 percent of the WRC annual budget, and a 30 percent cut for The Bruce.
