The Wenatchee Valley Humane Society (WVHS) board of directors took a huge leap of faith late in 2013, and the results should be seen in 2014 as groundbreaking for a new shelter is scheduled to begin.

Funding to replacing the aging shelter began in 2009 with a $1 million donation from the estate of local resident Helen Zilke. The board went to work to devise the best plan to accommodate a growing community with a building that would meet the standards of care for animals. The original tab for the new building totaled over $3.3 million
