Highway 2/97 just east of Cashmere was closed for about 30 minutes as a brush fire raged along a narrow strip of land between the highway and Mt. Stuart Road Sunday evening.

Firefighters from Chelan County Fire District 6 units in Cashmere, Monitor and Dryden were able to douse the flames and hold the fire to about 3/4 acre. One house was threatened, but not damaged. Cashmere Captain Jeremy Burns said the fire could have spread farther and more dangerously were it not for a homeowner on the 5300 block of Mt. Stuart Road that turned on his overhead sprinklers along a row of tall Poplar trees.

The fire was called in at 8 p.m. Sunday. Mop up was complete at about 9:30 p.m. Highway 2/97 reopened at about 9 p.m. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
