Commentary: After Kaymer’s 65, expect course to toughen up

PINEHURST, N.C. — All those red numbers atop the scoreboard after Thursday’s first round do not bode well for golfers in this year’s U.S. Open.

Especially for poor Martin Kaymer, the German who won the 2010 PGA and who did the unthinkable here. He dismantled a U.S. Open course, shooting a 5-under-par 65 for a three-shot lead.
