SALEM, Ore. — Sponsors of an initiative that would legalize recreational marijuana prepared Thursday to take boxes stuffed with more than 145,000 signed petitions to the state Capitol — far more than are needed for the measure to qualify for the November ballot.

The group New Approach Oregon held a news conference on the steps of the Multnomah County Courthouse in Portland before heading to Salem to submit the petitions to the Secretary of State’s Office to be counted and verified. The state will use a statistical sampling process to validate the accuracy of the signatures, which takes several weeks.
