The North Central Washington Economic Development District last week supplied some intriguing food for thought when it issued its list of three “top projects of regional economic significance” for 2014-15. The proposed projects are well known, but not necessarily discussed much outside a small circle of supporters. It’s time the rest of us kept them on the list of possibilities.
Project 1: The Leavenworth Pavilion and Ice Rink. Fundraising is well under way, designs proposed and land set aside for this project. Leavenworth has proposed ice rinks in various forms for 30 years, but this proposal appears to have the legs to make it. It would be located downtown near the Festhalle. Roofed, open-sided, with a refrigerated concrete pad, it would providing skating from fall to spring, and exhibit and event space in summer. The building will enhance Leavenworth’s already prodigious year-round attractions, provide jobs in construction and operation, enhance tourism and add to local recreational opportunities. Cost estimate: $4.4 million
