Historically low river levels between Rock Island and Wanapum dams has exposed wide expanses of sandy and muddy beach, the stumps of former orchards and debris that hasn’t been above water since the construction of Wanapum Dam flooded the area in 1964.

Curious residents have flocked to these shorelines to explore, but PUD officials warn that activities that disturb the shoreline are prohibited by state and federal law. This could include metal detecting or running motorized vehicles there.
