TACOMA — Going into Thursday’s quarterfinal contest at the Tacoma Dome, the Wenatchee Panthers knew they would need to keep the game slow if there was any hope of pulling an upset.
The gameplan worked for a quarter, but not much longer than that. The Richland Bombers built a 36-22 halftime lead thanks to a 13-6 run late in the second quarter. They dispelled any thoughts of a comeback in the third quarter and by the time the final frame began, Wenatchee’s fate was sealed. The Bombers went on to win 78-49 and will face Todd Beamer today in the Class 4A state semifinals. The Panthers, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to rectify Thursday’s blowout defeat in the consolation bracket against Gonzaga Prep.
