Obama seeks to expand overtime pay for millions

WASHINGTON — Millions of American workers could qualify for expanded overtime pay under a new push by President Barack Obama to review existing Labor Department regulations, part of his election-year strategy to use executive authority to bypass Congress and focus on middle-class economic issues.

Obama directed the Labor Department today to begin updating regulations aimed at preventing employers from designating lower-paid salaried workers as “managers” or “professionals” in order to make them ineligible for overtime, even though their primary responsibilities are the same as hourly workers, officials said.
