More than two weeks into the saga of the great Wanapum Dam spillway crack, and the region is still awestruck by the impact. Grant County PUD officials provided a briefing on the crisis Thursday and left the impression that an impressive supply of world-class engineering expertise is at work on the problem, but the answers and solution are not close at hand. Officials naturally hesitate to give a timeline, but say the return of normal river operations is likely “months” away.
We are not expert enough to know whether all that can be done is being done, but it is evident Grant County PUD has put every available resource to work. Speaking with them, the exhaustion was sometimes evident in their voices.
