GRAND COULEE — Members of Indian tribes from the U.S. Northwest and Canada got a close look Monday at Grand Coulee Dam, one of the most challenging obstacles in their effort to restore runs of migrating fish to the upper Columbia River.

“If you can build a dam, you can build a way for fish to get around it. It’s not impossible,” said Michael Zimmer, a member of Canada’s Okanagan Nation Alliance. He spoke from the floor of the dam’s Third Powerhouse, which contains six turbine/generator units, including three of the largest units in the world, each capable of producing 805 megawatts of electricity.
