One day not too long ago, Shelly Pflugrath turned on a sports radio station during a drive to Couer d’Alene, Idaho. College football commentator Lou Holtz was talking about the vaunted Alabama football program, which at that point was the NCAA Division-I two-time defending national champion.

“He said, ‘Programs get to a place where winning is expected and losing is devastating,” Pflugrath recalled. “That stuck with me — winning doesn’t feel as good because you’ve got to win the next one. For me, it’s great that we finally won a title because the program has been so deserving, and it’s such a relief because I feel that I can go back to coaching again. The expectations haven’t changed, but everyone can leave us alone about it.”
