Living in cougar country: Winthrop sheepherder heeds the warning

WINTHROP — Skip Smith is fourth-generation sheepherder. His great grandfather raised some 100,000 head in Idaho. His father and grandfather were also ran a commercial business. Smith’s BCS Livestock near Winthrop is a much smaller operation that produces wool for blankets and meat for local restaurants.

But whether you’re raising thousands of sheep or just 40, like the Smiths, predators are your biggest worry.
