When Jeff Carlson took over the Cashmere baseball program seven years ago, the Bulldogs were coming off a sub-.500 season in the Caribou Trail League, and after years of nondescript play as a member of the 2A Central Washington Athletic Conference before that, nobody was mistaking Cashmere baseball as a powerhouse.

When Mike Kelly took over the Cascade baseball program four years ago, the Kodiaks were coming off a successful 2010 campaign, and had a recent tradition of winning, but the program wasn’t to the point where it could be considered a serious challenger for a state title.
