NORTH CASCADES — State Department of Transportation crews Monday began work to reopen the North Cascades Highway.
It should be open to traffic in about six weeks.
Heavy snowfall and avalanche danger typically close the scenic route in the winter, when snow gets too deep for plow trucks.
Crews who recently assessed the route found nearly 10 feet of snow at the summit of Washington Pass and 35 feet below the Liberty Bell avalanche chutes.
