Apple Blossom royalty, World War II style

WENATCHEE — When three friends were selected as Apple Blossom royalty by fellow students at the Wenatchee High School in 1944, they knew there would be no parade, and no other festivities to reign over.

World War II had already prevented Wenatchee’s Apple Blossom events from taking place the previous year. Now at the height of war, goods like rubber, wire and fuel used in the floats were strictly rationed, along with other scarce commodities like coffee, sugar and nylon. But mostly, it just wouldn’t have felt right to celebrate at a time when so many friends and relatives were away at war.
