My recent reading includes a new book by Michael Sims, “The Adventures of Henry Thoreau.”

It describes his upbringing and early years that resulted in a man who was the ultimate dissident, naturalist, philosopher, and champion of self-reliance.

His writings about Walden Pond made him famous after his early death, his essay on Civil Disobedience has been used by many, including the late Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a confidant of Ralph Waldo Emerson, his benefactor in many ways.
