Bessie Mae Hawes
November 12, 1916 ~ May 18, 2014
Bessie Mae Hawes, 97, a longtime resident of George, WA, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 18, 2014, in Moses Lake, WA, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born November 12, 1916, to Fred and Elizabeth (Dexter) Pfirter at Chehalis, WA. Her mother died when she was one month old, and she was then raised by her father and paternal grandmother, who was 60 years old and on crutches. Bessie attended and graduated from Chehalis High School. She married Thomas Hawes on August 28, 1934, and they moved to the Quincy-George area in 1959. They were married 60 years when he passed away in 1994. In addition to raising her six children, she spent her life working on the family farm and shingle mill, cooking at Niderost Dehy Plant, operating the George scales, and assisting her daughter, Donna, at her antique stores. Bessie enjoyed gardening, crocheting, writing poems, visiting her family and friends, collecting antiques and knickknacks, going to yard sales, talking on the phone with her longtime best friend, Bonnie Pickthorn, and spending time with her cat, Kelly. She also taught Sunday school for many years. In the last few years, she lived with and was cared for by her granddaughter, Amy; children, Donna and Bruce and Ben and Carol; with help from her special friend and caregiver, Doris Wimberly. Bessie had little regard for her own well being; instead was trying to improve the lives of others any way she could. Her love for her family and friends was certainly unconditional.
Bessie is survived by her six children, Luann (Lee) Allison of Spanaway, WA, Marlene Keith of Quincy, WA, Nancy Albright of Royal City, WA, Ben (Carol) Hawes of Quincy, WA, David (Lana) Hawes and Donna (Bruce) Pelham of Potlatch, ID; 21 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two grandchildren.
