WENATCHEE — As the runoff-swollen Columbia River flowed high and fast nearby, members of the Wenatchee Row & Paddle Club worked this weekend to complete a permanent public memorial for a young girl who drowned after jumping off their dock two years ago.

The eight basalt columns and resting bench are designed to pay tribute to Liliana Leon-Tamaya’s heroic effort to save a friend from drowning in the river on May 28, 2012. Her friend was rescued, but Leon-Tamaya died in the cold, fast water.
