Safety Valve: Letters from readers

Vote them out: I would like to see The World tell us how Congress votes on the health care. It appears that the majority of Americans do not want this monster of a health care bill. If President Obama would have worked on one issue at a time, say, Medicare fraud, insurance issues, etc., we would be behind him. Tell your legislator to vote no if you are unhappy with this bill. These people forget that they are supposed to be our voice, not the other way around! We can vote them out. And some of them have been there far too long!

Don’t look away: The current attempt to reform America’s health care system has a strong chance of being defeated. To have this reform defeated, Americans would simply need to look away from the following factors:

Safety Valve: Letters from readers

Pure irresponsibility: The publication of the cause of death information from the death certificate of Mackenzie Cowell is unconscionable. There was absolutely no benefit that can come from publishing this information and unquestioned potential damage to the chances of ultimately making a good case against the perpetrator of this crime. You have awarded to yourself the wisdom of knowing better than the officers working this case about what is helpful or damaging to their effort.

Safety Valve: Letters from readers

Outrageously untrue: Tracy Warner’s health care editorial (March 9) gets only one cheer. You say health care cost inflation is eating us up and we must control it. HOORAY! I am withholding further cheers because the remainder strikes me as mostly wishy-washy and indecisive, except for the part I believe is just wrong. You cite Warren Buffett, uncritically, supporting Obama’s Senate bill “if the alternative is nothing,” but preferring to scrap it and start over. Namby pamby. You hide behind “analysts” saying Obama’s plan will not add to private care costs and quote Obama saying it will “save billions.” Where do you stand? Is this true or false?

Run, trees, run: The tree butchers are here. As you may note, tree pruning is a pet peeve with me. As a landscape architect, it disturbs me to see supposed tree professionals giving advice who have no clue what they are talking about, other than they want to receive money for butchering a tree.

Grateful I am so grateful to Kerry Logan for writing to The Safety Valve Feb. 26 concerning the lighted cross placed by Randy Smith.

Safety Valve: Letters from readers

Thinking about the cross: Kerry Logan, Thank you for the hug. The cross is not mine. I would say it belongs to God. I have a major part in the responsibility for it. Over the past 16 years hundreds have given time and money to make it happen.

What about solutions?: A recent letter to The Safety Vavle by Bill Cowles March 5 represents much of what is wrong with the political system in our country today. Mr. Cowles’ letter lists about 25 unfounded indictments against the current president and the Democrats in general. These are Mr. Cowles’ opinions (or those of his favorite “news” source), and I will certainly support him in his right to have opinions. However, it takes no insight or knowledge or intelligence to rail against something or anything. Alternately, it takes true wisdom to present intelligent solutions in an effective manner. It doesn’t require a skilled craftsman to knock a house down — just a big hammer and a little muscle. If those persons or groups challenging current policies, either on the right or the left, had serious alternatives to these policies and presented them rationally, dialogue would ensue and progress would happen. Unfortunately, much of the popular media devotes hours to tearing down policies, ideas and solutions and absolutely no time to serious alternatives. Politicians in Washington too often do the same. It’s the easy way to go — the lazy way to go. It takes no knowledge, no thought and no effort, and it gets us nowhere.

What of the presidents? On Jan. 19, I opened The Wenatchee World to see a very large picture of a young boy celebrating Martin Luther King Day, with an extensive article. Knowing that Presidents Day was coming up, I waited to read about how the schools celebrate and teach our children about two of our greatest presidents.

Symbol of love: Regarding Kerry Logan and the letter (Safety Valve, Feb. 26) concerning the cross placed by Randy Smith: It absolutely amazes me at how people want to live in this “free” country, but the minute someone does something they disagree with they want it changed their way. As for your interpretation of the cross, maybe if you used it the way I do, it would make you have a better outlook on life. For instance, when you look at it, instead of thinking oppression, terror, greed, etc., as you stated, try thinking: Oh yeah, have I said thank you for my family, my home, my warm bed, my friends, the food I eat, and so on? Or maybe, when you look at the wonderful cross on the hill try using it as a reminder to do a good deed for someone, or that you need to feed the hungry, help someone in need, etc.

Healthier, longer: On March 3, owners of Weinstein Beverage wrote The Wenatchee World regarding a tax on soda.

Promise not kept: It finally came to me that President Obama can’t fulfill his promise for change, simply because he doesn’t have the vocabulary.

Good job, bad jokes: The Olympic Winter Games are over, the medals have been awarded and the host city can be very proud of a perfect venue for the event. What concerns me were the closing ceremonies. I think 90 percent of it was outstanding. The closing remarks were inspiring. Then the bottom fell out of the program. William Shatner? “Boston Legal.” He was gross and very uncomplimentary to Canada and the dignity of the occasion. He referenced beer drinking and sex in canoes.

What about Toyota?: I’ve been a happy Toyota owner for over 40 years and their current situation is troubling and confusing.

When Christians fail: I want to thank Kerry Logan for the honest, brave and respectful letter regarding Randy Smith’s cross (The Safety Valve, Feb. 26).
