Cespedes hits go-ahead homer as A’s beat Mariners

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Another dramatic win in hand, the Oakland Athletics gathered around the big screen clubhouse TV and began feasting on Mexican food while watching the Angels and Rangers play the second game of their Texas doubleheader. The upstart A's are still chasing an AL West title with three games to go. And that's about as ideal a scenario as anyone around here could have envisioned in a season full of injuries, sweeping changes and even a drug suspension for key starting pitcher Bartolo Colon.

Mariners swept in Oakland after another tough loss

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Seattle Mariners watched Oakland make a playoff push with a pair of dramatic weekend wins. So close sometimes, these Mariners. They missed chances in the early innings, just as they did all series in being swept.

Whalen scores 20 to lead Lynx past Storm 78-70

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — With Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore around, Lindsay Whalen's focus generally isn't on scoring. That doesn't mean she can't. Whalen scored 20 points to lead the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 78-70 victory over the Seattle Storm in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals Friday night.

Mariners avoid sweep, slow Angels’ playoff surge

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — John Jaso doesn't see the Seattle Mariners as spoilers. They're active participants in the AL pennant race, even if it's from the outside — and they showed the Angels how much they've already learned. Jaso hit a two-run homer and an RBI double, and Seattle prevented Los Angeles from moving within one game of an AL wild-card spot with a 9-4 victory over the Angels on Thursday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Torii Hunter's RBI singles tied it in the seventh inning and ended it in the ninth, and the Los Angeles Angels rallied to keep pace in the AL wild-card race with their fifth consecutive victory, 4-3 over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night. Erick Aybar had an early two-run double before Hunter ended it for the Angels (86-69), who remained two games behind Oakland (88-67) after the other three teams in the AL wild-card race all won earlier in the day.

Rodgers, Packers try to move past referee debacle

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — One day after venting on his radio show about the refereeing debacle that cost the Green Bay Packers a game in Seattle, Aaron Rodgers was saving one last barb for the NFL. Asked Wednesday about how the Packers were handling the aftermath of a Monday night loss that touched off a national firestorm about the league's use of replacement officials, Rodgers dismissed an NFL-issued statement generally supporting the officials' handling of the situation a "bogus report."

Greinke Ks 13 through 5, Angels edge Seattle 5-4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Zack Greinke had a season-high 13 strikeouts in five innings, and the Angels got home runs from Torii Hunter and Erick Aybar on Tuesday night in a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners that kept Los Angeles two games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card. According to ESPN Stats, Greinke became the first pitcher in the live-ball era (since 1920) to strike out 13 batters in a start that lasted only five innings. Randy Johnson had 13 through his first five frames on July ...

Russell Wilson threw a disputed 24-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on the final play of the game, a game that finally ended 10 minutes later when both teams were brought back on the field for the extra point.

A night after the teams played an 18-inning marathon that lasted nearly 6 hours, Jones, the one-time Mariners prospect, gave Baltimore a huge boost in its race with the Yankees for the lead in the AL East. Even with New York sweeping a doubleheader from Toronto on Wednesday, the Orioles stayed just a ...

Halliday leads Washington State past UNLV, 35-27

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nick Sherry had a career-game for UNLV. It just wasn't enough to help the Rebels end an eight-game losing streak and beat Washington State. Sherry passed for 351 yards and three touchdowns and had 33 completions to tie a school record set by Jon Denton in 1996 against San Jose State. He couldn't rally the Rebels from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit and UNLV fell 35-27 to the Cougars on Friday night.

Officiating error in Arizona 3rd of its kind

NEW YORK (AP) — The replacement officials' error that awarded an extra timeout to Seattle in the final minute of its loss at Arizona was the third such mistake in an NFL game in the last nine years. In 2009, the Cleveland Browns were mistakenly awarded four timeouts in the second half of a 16-0 home loss to Baltimore. And in 2003, the Baltimore Ravens got four in a 44-41 overtime win against Seattle.

Carroll laments Seattle’s missed chances in loss

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Forget all the hand-wringing surrounding the Seattle Seahawks' final drive against Arizona, the botched timeout situation and ultimately Russell Wilson's last pass attempt that eluded the hands of Braylon Edwards at the goal line. For all the focus on that one drive, there were plenty of other opportunities the Seahawks missed earlier in the 20-16 loss to the Cardinals.
