NCW — The mayors of Quincy, Oroville and Brewster all have challengers, along with quite a few other positions up for election in North Central Washington this year. Candidates for open positions had to file for election this week.

Local pears heading for China

WENATCHEE — Northwest pears will soon be sold and shipped to China for the first time, thanks to a recent agreement the U.S. pear industry and Chinese government. The agreement was announced Wednesday during Washington Pear Day in Wenatchee. The pear industry has been trying to get approval to sell pears in China for nearly 20 years, said Kevin Moffitt, president of the Pear Bureau Northwest.

Ecology issues ban on burning

WENATCHEE — The state Department of Ecology on Tuesday banned all outdoor burning and the use of uncertified wood-burning stoves, inserts or fireplaces in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties, until further notice. Current weather conditions has resulted in stagnant air, and air quality monitors in Wenatchee and Twisp recorded moderate air quality, while those in Leavenworth and Okanogan registered air unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Comments on merging festival due Monday

Public opinion seems to favor a merger of the city’s two annual festivals into one larger celebration, says the local Chamber of Commerce manager.

Son and father near college completion

Ryan Sutherland will head back to Spokane next week to resume his final semester at Whitworth University. With him will be his father, Steve. The Cashmere father and son duo have been roommates at the college since 2009.

Missing Cashmere hunter turns up safe, horse missing

WHITE PASS — A Yakima County sheriff’s spokesman says a Cashmere hunter who had been missing with his horse since Saturday near White Pass has turned up and is in good condition. The man’s horse is missing. Sgt. George Town says 49-year-old Lance Chipman turned up Monday at a camp several miles from Dumbbell Lake. Chipman told rescuers that darkness fell Saturday while he was still on the trail. He says he veered off the trail and at one point that night got off his horse — and the horse ...
