Forest Service opens Chelan office Saturdays

CHELAN — The Chelan Ranger District will begin opening its office on Saturdays from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. The office at 428 W. Woodin Ave. will now be open Mondays through Saturdays until Labor Day to provide information on recreation, trails, campgrounds and permits, a U.S. Forest Service news release said.

Several contested races in North Central Washington

NCW — The mayors of Quincy, Oroville and Brewster all have challengers, along with quite a few other positions up for election in North Central Washington this year. Candidates for open positions had to file for election this week.

Chelan Falls power outage to be fixed by 11 a.m.

CHELAN FALLS — A downed power line on Chestnut Street has knocked out power to about 180 Chelan County PUD customers. Crews expect to restore power by 11 a.m., utility official say.

Bond issues still failing, levies passing

NCW — Two requests to issue school bonds are still failing after more ballots were counted Friday. The measures by the Entiat and Okanogan school district to issue bonds to renovate buildings needed 60 percent approval to pass. The Entiat School District’s request for a $7.952 million bond is failing with 57.8 percent of voters in favor. The Okanogan School District’s request for a $1.15 million bond to repair its buildings is failing with 58.3 percent in favor.

NCW levies all passing while bonds are falling short

WENATCHEE — Several school and ambulance levies in Chelan and Okanogan counties are all passing after ballots were counted in Tuesday’s special election. But two bond issues sought by the Entiat and the Okanogan school district are currently falling short of the required 60 percent needed to pass.

Former Chelan hospital CEO wins defamation arbitration

SEATTLE — Arbitrators have awarded $350,000 to former Lake Chelan Community Hospital CEO David Bernier, finding that the hospital defamed him. The final arbitration ruling by the panel in Seattle ends a legal battle over the hospital’s decision to fire Bernier less than two years after he was hired.

Bond, levies sought by Chelan County schools

NCW — Voters in four Chelan County school districts will soon decide on funding proposals ranging from construction projects to classroom programs. Ballots must be dropped off or postmarked by the Feb. 12 special election.

Judge reverses decision ordering removal of Three Fingers

WENATCHEE — A judge has reversed her decision from last summer ordering the removal of three manmade peninsulas on Lake Chelan. The issue will instead go to trial, Chelan County Superior Court Judge Lesley Allan ruled.

Ecology issues ban on burning

WENATCHEE — The state Department of Ecology on Tuesday banned all outdoor burning and the use of uncertified wood-burning stoves, inserts or fireplaces in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties, until further notice. Current weather conditions has resulted in stagnant air, and air quality monitors in Wenatchee and Twisp recorded moderate air quality, while those in Leavenworth and Okanogan registered air unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Chelan opens snowmobile trails

CHELAN — The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest opened all snowmobile trails on the Chelan Ranger District Tuesday. Snowmobile grooming started on the north shore trail system including Antilon, Echo Valley, Black Caynon and Gold Creek Sno-Parks. The rest of the trails on the south shore will be groomed later in the week.
