NCW — The mayors of Quincy, Oroville and Brewster all have challengers, along with quite a few other positions up for election in North Central Washington this year. Candidates for open positions had to file for election this week.
The Cascade Quest sled dog race is being held this weekend at the Lake Wenatchee Recreation Club at Lake Wenatchee. The event is free for spectators, and it will continue on Sunday morning starting with a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Racing action will continue throughout the morning until after noon, when the mushers return. WENATCHEE -- Lake Wenatchee’s south-shore residents get to keep the fiber-optic network and its fast Internet, telephone and cable TV service that they’ve lobbied hard to get. Chelan County PUD officials late Friday announced that they will rebuild the shore’s storm-damaged fiber optics cable after determining that a cheaper, wireless alternative “is not the best option at this time.”
WENATCHEE — The state Department of Ecology on Tuesday banned all outdoor burning and the use of uncertified wood-burning stoves, inserts or fireplaces in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties, until further notice. Current weather conditions has resulted in stagnant air, and air quality monitors in Wenatchee and Twisp recorded moderate air quality, while those in Leavenworth and Okanogan registered air unhealthy for sensitive groups.
World staff writer LAKE WENATCHEE — So much snow has fallen since last month’s damaging winter storm that it takes a closer look to spot some of the problems that linger for residents in Lake Wenatchee and Plain areas.
WENATCHEE — The state Department of Ecology is offering a new fee-based program to speed up the water rights application process, and the Wenatchee Basin will be the first to try it out. Some 150 water right applicants will get letters inviting them to help hire a consultant who can sort through applications so that water for new applicants can become available. Applicants can then reimburse Ecology for hiring the state-approved contractor to process pending applications.
LAKE WENATCHEE — Chelan County PUD crews are working to restore electricity to 600 customers in the Lake Wenatchee area who went dark around 6:45 a.m. after snow-laden tree branches fell into powerlines. PUD spokeswoman Kimberlee Craig said the lights will likely be out until around 11 a.m.
WENATCHEE — It may be Black Friday in town, but some parts of North Central Washington woke up to a white Friday. Some 5 inches of new snow coated the Methow Valley, and 7 inches had fallen in areas north of Lake Chelan.
NCW — Fire officials this weekend set a containment date of Dec. 1 for the Wenatchee Complex fires, which are now 70 percent contained. And while many of the resources assigned to the fires that stretch from Leavenworth to Chelan are demobilizing, fire officials say what they’ve always said — it will take significant rain or snow to actually put them out.
NCW — Residents who evacuated in the St. Mary’s Mission Road Fire east of Omak on Tuesday were allowed to return home Saturday morning. The road — where two homes and eight other buildings were destroyed and the Paschal Sherman Indian School was threatened by the wind-driven fire — remains closed to the public. Now 15 percent contained, the fire is still active, and more than 500 firefighting personnel, eight helicopters and 39 engines are working to protect the 54 homes still considered threatened on the Colville Indian Reservation, fire ...
WENATCHEE — A fire near Liberty in Kittitas County became so massive and powerful on Wednesday afternoon that it began to threaten homes several miles away, near Mission Ridge. Officials issued evacuation notices to about 200 homes in the Mission Ridge area Wednesday evening, after the 9,500-acre Table Mountain fire blew up, sending a column of smoke about 35,000 feet into the sky.
