Roundup: Ephrata comes back to beat Quincy

QUINCY — Did Sergio Magana run into the end zone to score a two-point conversion and give the Ephrata football team a one-point lead over arch-rival Quincy with less than 90 seconds to go in Friday’s Battle of the Basin contest at Jaycee Stadium, or didn’t he? That’s a question that surely will debated in both Columbia Basin towns in the coming weeks, months and possibly years. Heck, even the referees couldn’t agree if Magana had crossed the goal line or not.

All-league lists dominated by top teams

A number of area teams were dominant on the diamond, track or court this season, and that dominance carried over to post-season awards. The Wenatchee boys tennis team, Panthers boys track squad and Cashmere baseball team are just a few of the teams that racked up awards just like they had victories during the season.

Prep playoff picture sharpening

EAST WENATCHEE — The spring playoff picture is starting to come into focus across North Central Washington. The Eastmont boys soccer team will host Sunnyside at 4 p.m. today in a Class 3A sub-regional contest in a matchup of the fourth- and fifth-seeded teams from the Big Nine.

May means playoff time

Ed Knaggs has remarked often this spring about how quickly the prep baseball season flashes by. The Wenatchee baseball coach has led the Panthers onto the field for 12 regular-season game dates since March 15, and will do so again today in the postseason.

EAST WENATCHEE — After his team had controlled play in the first half, Eastmont soccer coach Eric Duffey thought the Wildcats were well on their way to a victory after breaking a scoreless tie in the 50th minute. But Southridge had other plans.

EAST WENATCHEE — The Eastmont fastpitch softball team launched an early salvo in its battle for the third seed to the Big Nine 3A district playoffs. The Wildcats routed Pasco 12-2 and 16-1 Thursday, and in doing so, launched themselves into the preferred third spot — for the time being.

CASHMERE — The Cashmere Bulldogs’ dominance over the rest of Caribou Trail League took on a new level Saturday afternoon. Nick Tarver and Trenton Johnson threw back-to-back no-hitters as the Bulldogs (9-0 Caribou Trail League) rolled to wins of 27-0 and 26-0 over the Tonasket Tigers.

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee track teams were dominant on Thursday, as both the boys and girls squads swept Eisenhower, Davis and Moses Lake in a Big Nine 4A quad-meet at home. The Panthers’ superiority was on full display, as Wenatchee’s boys won eight of 10 track events, and the girls took seven of 11, including the top three spots in the 100-meter hurdles.

KENNEWICK — Despite getting beaten by a strong Southridge squad, Eastmont track coach Gary Millard came away from Thursday’s meet pleased with the performances of a number of athletes. “All in all it was a good meet,” he said. “We had some illnesses going around and we’re still working out some of the early season (kinks), but it was a good meet.”

LAKE ROOSEVELT — The Lake Roosevelt boys played inspired basketball against Oroville on Tuesday night even though the Raiders clinched the North Central Washington League’s North Division title last week. The contest marked the final home game for the Raiders’ seniors. It also came a day after the school’s principal, Steve Breeze, passed away.

Ephrata’s bid for first win falls short

EPHRATA — The Ephrata boys basketball team’s bid for its first win of the season in its last game of the year fell inches short on Friday. Zach Allen’s three-quarters-court shot hit the rim and bounced away at the final buzzer, giving Othello a 59-57 victory over the Tigers. Ephrata finished the season with an 0-20 record a year after advancing to the Class 2A state tournament.

COULEE DAM — The Lake Roosevelt Raiders’ take over of the Central Washington League North Division is official. The Raider boys handed Brewster a 73-50 defeat on Tuesday night, improving to 9-0 in league play and locking up at least a share of the North Division title with three games to go.

COULEE DAM — When it comes to the Lake Roosevelt Raiders, the second time was the charm for the Chelan Goats. A month after the Raiders beat the Goats on their home floor, Chelan returned the favor Saturday night, beating Lake Roosevelt 60-51 in a non-league clash between a pair of league leaders.
