YAKIMA — Paul Jagla scored a major decision over Eisenhower’s Dakota Kountz in the final bout of the match to give Wenatchee a 36-32 victory over the Cadets Thursday night. It was a seesaw battle all evening, as Eisenhower won the first four bouts to take a 19-0 lead.
A number of area teams were dominant on the diamond, track or court this season, and that dominance carried over to post-season awards. The Wenatchee boys tennis team, Panthers boys track squad and Cashmere baseball team are just a few of the teams that racked up awards just like they had victories during the season.
EAST WENATCHEE — After his team had controlled play in the first half, Eastmont soccer coach Eric Duffey thought the Wildcats were well on their way to a victory after breaking a scoreless tie in the 50th minute. But Southridge had other plans.
EAST WENATCHEE — The Southridge boys and Hanford girls won the Big Nine 3A golf circuits’ first stop at the Highlander Golf Course this year, an Eastmont-hosted POD meet on Monday afternoon. Rain drizzled on the course throughout the day, and it was shortened to a 16-hole par-65 due to construction on the second and third holes. The renovation is scheduled to be finished by the time the Big Nine girls teams return for their district tournament on May 16.
WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee track teams were dominant on Thursday, as both the boys and girls squads swept Eisenhower, Davis and Moses Lake in a Big Nine 4A quad-meet at home. The Panthers’ superiority was on full display, as Wenatchee’s boys won eight of 10 track events, and the girls took seven of 11, including the top three spots in the 100-meter hurdles.
EAST WENATCHEE — Eastmont soccer coach Eric Duffey will take a win any way he can get one, but at the same time, he’d like to see his team put away its opposition earlier in games. The Wildcats scored four second-half goals to break open a tight game and pull away for a 5-1 win over Hanford on Saturday.
EAST WENATCHEE — The debuts of two heralded freshman were the prevailing stories after a four-team season-opening meet at Eastmont on Thursday. The Wenatchee girls and Eastmont boys were the team winners, but the schools’ other squads lay claim to the noteworthy athletes: Eastmont’s Rebecca Tarbert began her high school career by winning the girls 100 (13.03 seconds), 200 (27.58 seconds), and long jump (15 feet, eight inches), while Wenatchee’s Isaiah Brandt-Sims kicked things off with an 11.01-second finish to win the boys 100, and a second-place finish in the ...
Jordan Takasugi is already off to a solid start in 2011, placing fifth and seventh, respectively in her first two tournaments. TACOMA — Eighteen NCW wrestlers, including a pair of defending champions, are still in the hunt for state titles after the first day of action at Mat Classic XXIII in the Tacoma Dome. Only one of the remaining champs will defend his title, as Cashmere’s Roman Velazquez and Tonasket’s Keegan McCormick are semifinalists in the 171-pound bracket.
WENATCHEE — Wednesday’s tears were replaced by smiles Friday for the Lake Roosevelt girls basketball team. Two days after losing a heart-breaker to White Swan, the Raiders rebounded for a 47-39 victory over Riverside Christian to clinch a state tournament berth.
WENATCHEE — The Entiat girls basketball team made the fifth-ranked Brewster Bears sweat for a little while on Wednesday night, which is more than most teams can say this season. Entiat led the Bears by three after a spurt to begin the second quarter, but Brewster regrouped and went on to thump the ninth-ranked Tigers 74-43 in a Class 2B district semifinal game at Wenatchee.
WENATCHEE — The Pateros girls basketball team had the element of surprise. Entiat had Mandy Southard. Southard made the Nannies pay for trying a man-to-man defense against the Tigers, scoring 37 points in Entiat’s 69-47 victory Monday during the first round of the Class 2B district tournament at Wenatchee High School.
PASCO — The Eastmont wrestling team qualified two wrestlers for next weekend’s Mat Classic state meet during Saturday’s Region IV 3A tournament. Fabian Wickham and Johnny Martinez will represent the Wildcats in next weekend’s state meet.
