Mission Ridge wins 2nd straight NW Cup title

WENATCHEE — The Mission Ridge Ski Team was crowned the overall Northwest Cup team champion following the last races of the season season on Sunday. It’s the second consecutive year MRST has captured the team title, which goes to the program that accumulates the most points during a series of races during the season. MRST also won the overall men’s and women’s titles as well for the second year in a row.

Veteran instructor not ready to hang up the skis yet

WENATCHEE — It’s hard to keep tabs on Otto Ross. When he’s not teaching lessons at Mission Ridge, the 87-year-old ski instructor’s gliding down the mountain side, breathing the crisp air and soaking in the settle nuances that make for a new experience each time out.

Four LWSC skiers to compete at junior national event

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Four Leavenworth Winter Sports Club cross country skiers will compete at the United States Ski and Snowboard Association Marriott Junior National Cross Country Ski Championships, which will start Saturday and run through March 16 in Fairbanks, Alaska.

LWSC skiers qualify for Junior Nationals

MOUNT SPOKANE — Leavenworth Winter Sports Club cross country skiers Blakely Brown and Nate Wells qualified for for the Pacific Northwest Ski Association Junior National cross country ski team last weekend at Mt. Spokane. Wells, who competed in the J2 group (ages 14-15), took first in Saturday’s five-kilometer classic race and second in Sunday’s five-kilometer skate race.

Erik Bjornsen claims national title

MIDWAY, Utah — North Central Washington skiers continued to have a successful week at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships at Soldier Hollow, as Winthrop’s Erik Bjornsen claimed his first national title in the men’s 15K freestyle individual start on Friday. Bjornsen, 21, joins Leavenworth’s Torin Koos as local skiers to claim championships this week — Koos won his eighth national title in the classic sprint Wednesday. Bjornsen’s older sister, Sadie, has also fared well, taking second in both Wednesday’s classic sprint and Friday’s freestyle.

Reunited a mile high

When Mission Ridge Ski Team athlete Clare Wise looks around her new home in Boulder, Colo., where she is attending classes and skiing for the University of Colorado, she often sees her old home in Wenatchee. “Boulder is like Wenatchee a lot because there is so much to do with the outdoors so close,” Wise says. “There are hiking trails not even five minutes out of town. And there is a huge road biking and mountain biking community here, too.

USST athletes let ‘er rip in Day 5 of Spring Series

WENATCHEE — Three young members of the U.S. Ski Team finished first, second and fourth Tuesday in the men’s giant slalom at the Western Region Elite Spring Series. Brennan Rubie, 20, of Salt Lake City had a combined time at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort of 2 minutes, 09.10 seconds to beat teammate Robert Cone, 19, of Killington, Vt., by half-a-second. Placing third was Sweden’s Marcus Plyhr in 2:09.71. Another U.S. Ski Team athlete Nicholas Krause, 18, of Northboro, Mass., was fourth with a time of 2:10.18.

U.S. skiers Ross, Wales notch second victories

U.S. Ski Team athlete Laurenne Ross easily won her second championship Monday at the Western Region Elite Spring Series at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort. Under sunny skies, Ross, 23, of Klamath Falls, Ore., had a combined time of 2 minutes, 11.94 seconds in the giant slalom, nearly two seconds faster than runner-up Matea Ferk, 24, of Crotia, who finished in 2:13.91. Emma Naatz, 18, of Salt Lake City, placed third in 2:14.47.

MRST sweeps event

WENATCHEE — Mission Ridge Ski Team captured the top three places and five of the top six spots in Monday’s men’s giant slalom race as the Northwest Cup series wrapped up for another season. Alec Jones won in a combined time of two minutes, 7.19 seconds, followed by teammates Miles Sweek (2:08.42) in second, Travis Ahmann (2:09.50) in third, Danny O’Neal (2:09.56) in fourth, and Austin Dean (2:10.22) in sixth. Gage Managhan was 10th. O’Neal was the top J2 skier in the event.

Ridge to host NW Cup

The Mission Ridge Ski Team will be in full force this weekend when it hosts the Northwest Cup Finals on the mountain.

MRST gears up for J3s

Three Mission Ridge Ski Team athletes will be at the starting gates Friday when the J3 Western Region Junior Championships unfold at Big Sky Resort, Mont., with boys and girls super-G races.

SANDPOINT, Idaho — Two Mission Ridge Ski Team members reached the podium Wednesday on the second day of the week-long Western Region Junior Championships at Schweitzer Mountain. Haley Hanseler placed second and teammate Clare Wise third in the women’s giant slalom. Hanseler had the top time after the event’s first run, but saw French of Park City, Utah, beat her by more than a second to pull out the victory. French finished in two minutes, 10.42 seconds, with Hanseler came in 2:10.77. Wise clocked 2:10.98.

MRST’s Noges wins super-G title

Mission Ridge’s Carl Noges won the men’s super-G race Tuesday at the Western Region Junior Championships at Schweitzer Mountain.

2 Ridge skiers at J2s

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, Calif. — The week-long U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association J2 National Championships began here Monday with downhill training runs for both men and women. Mission Ridge Ski Team’s Kyla Miller posted the eighth fastest women’s time on the day, while teammate Danny O’Neal had the 30th fastest time among the men.

Mission Ridge skier reaches podium again

MOUNT HOOD, Ore. — Delilah Cupp of the Mission Ridge Ski Team finished off an impressive weekend of skiing with a second-place showing Monday in the super-G at the J3 Qualifier series at Mount Hood Ski Bowl. Cupp completed the course in 59.84 seconds, just 31/100th of a second behind winner Jordan Harrison of the Crystal Mountain Alpine Club.
