Skier Bill Johnson’s health in decline

Once helped into his motorized scooter, former Olympic champion and Mission Ridge Ski Team member Bill Johnson races through the halls of an assisted living facility in Gresham, Ore., hardly ever backing off the accelerator. A series of strokes have all but immobilized the skier who once lived life on the edge, whose confidence, charisma and rebellious attitude made him a fan favorite at the 1984 Winter Olympics, where he became the first American to capture the downhill crown.

Mission Ridge ski team dominates Hampton Cup

WENATCHEE — Mission Ridge’s Alec Jones won his second straight giant slalom race Sunday on his home course to capture the overall Hampton Cup trophy. Jones had plenty of competition — from his own teammates. The Mission Ridge Ski Team claimed the top five spots and six of the top seven in the men’s race.

Ski area to open Saturday

CHELAN — After a long wait with not enough snow, the Echo Valley Ski Area near Chelan will open on Saturday. “We’re ready to go,” said said Adrienne Carpenter, who runs the ski shop there with her husband, Keith.

SANDPOINT, Idaho — Mission Ridge’s Alec Jones put together a blistering second run to win Sunday’s giant slalom on the final day of the Northwest Cup stop at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Jones’ combined time for his two runs was 2:10.43, including a 1:04.99 second run that vaulted him into first place over Kenny Wilson, 17, of Squaw Valley, Idaho, and Russell Ronsky, 16, of Canada.

MRST lands pair on elite ski squad

WENATCHEE — Mission Ridge Ski Team members Alec Jones and Austin Dean have been named to the Western Elite Ski Team, the Pacific Northwest Ski Association has announced. Joining Jones and Dean, both 17 years old, on the team are three other Northwest skiers — Anna Mounsey of Team Alpental Snoqualmie, Jordan Schweitzer of Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation, and Jacqueline Wiles of the White Pass Ski Club.

Ridge skiers make U.S. Team

WENATCHEE — It was expected for weeks. So it came as no great surprise when two Mission Ridge Ski Team members were officially added this week to the 2012 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. Still, it’s quite a tip-of-the-hat to the local ski program.

Ridge coach Yamamoto chosen for top award

WENATCHEE — Longtime Mission Ridge Ski Team coach Claudia Yamamoto was named the Pacific Northwest Ski Association’s coach of the year during ceremonies Saturday evening. Yamamoto is only the second woman to win the award in the ski association’s history. The Quincy resident has served as a coach for more than 30 years at Mission Ridge, 49 Degrees North near Spokane and at Alta, Utah. During her racing days, she competed in Northwest Cups, U.S. Nationals, Can Ams, and the Western Region Elite Spring Series.

Granstrom 2nd in giant slalom

WENATCHEE — Colby Granstrom put himself in a big hole with his first run, and could not quite climb out. On the second-to-last day of the Wester Region Elite FIS Spring Series at Mission Ridge on Tuesday, Granstrom found himself in 11th place after the first men’s giant slalom run. He made up a bunch of time on the second run — posting the fastest time of the run by more than two-tenths of a second — but only caught nine of the 10 racers who were in front of ...

Olympian wins giant slalom at Mission

WENATCHEE — Sarah Schleper may have four Winter Olympics appearances under her belt, but the Vail, Colo., resident was still without a win in the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series over the past two years when she took to the Mission Ridge course on Monday. At the end of the day, that was no longer the case.

Ridge team members win Sunday

WENATCHEE — Brooke Wales’ return to her home mountain just keeps getting better and better. A stellar second run led the Mission Ridge Ski Team member to a giant slalom victory Sunday in the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series at Mission Ridge Ski and Board Resort, just two days after she won the super-G and super combined races.

Nothing like the home course

WENATCHEE — Brooke Wales has not spent a lot of time on her “home” course this season, but she looked mighty comfortable there Friday as she won both the women’s super-G and super combined races on the first day of the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series at Mission Ridge Ski and Board Resort. “It’s very nice to be home. I’ve trained on the hill plenty,” said Wales, who grew up in Sammamish but spent most of her winters in Wenatchee and at Mission Ridge before embarking on an international ...

Ridge team second in overall standings

WENATCHEE — The Mission Ridge Ski Team posted top finishes this past weekend during the Northwest Cup Finals at the ski area. The Northwest Cup, overseen by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, attracts the top junior skiers in the region.

U.S. title for Ridge ski racer

WINTER PARK, Colo. — Mission Ridge Ski Team member Colby Granstrom broke up Tommy Ford’s monopoly at the U.S. championships on Sunday, winning the slalom with a fast final run in snowy conditions. Julia Mancuso couldn’t add to her career mark of 13 U.S. titles, skiing off the course in whiteout conditions during the first run of the women’s race. She won the super-G and giant slalom earlier this week.
