PHOTO: Brian Bird, 26, of East Wenatchee tests a catapult Sunday that he built and is refining for his Wenatchee Valley College pre-engineering physics class. Bird has been working on the device, built without the use of metal, for three weeks and will compete with seven to 15 other students from physics classes on Friday. Students will be judged on how far and accurately their catapults will fling a tennis ball and how original their design is. He says he has spent about $100 in materials and plans to improve it using modern materials after the competition.
