Russ Langshaw, fishery scientist for the Grant County PUD, pauses along the edge of a 17-acre tract of White River floodplain the utility bought in 2006. The utility wants to install acclimation ponds to raise spring chinook salmon to supplement the river’s wild fish. Conservation groups oppose the plan, saying it would marr one of the Columbia Basin’s few remaining pristine rivers.
