PHOTO: An apple tree is encased in ice Sunday morning in a Chelan orchard where sprinklers were left on overnight. Some growers leave sprinklers on intentionally, hoping the ice will protect the apples from cold damage. The only drawback is if the ice causes the fruit to fall or temperatures do not warm up enough to allow for thawing and subsequent picking.
