PHOTO: KNAPP’S HILL GRADE: In the late 1920s, this sign at the top of Knapp’s Hill grade, between Entiat and Chelan, warned motorists what to expect before they arrived at the bottom. The grade at the time was 15 to 20 percent. The original road was built in 1897 and replaced in 1936 by a 3.1-mile gradual highway and tunnel.
