Everytime I get the flu shot, I wind up with the flu. It doesnt help when you are at a public place, (library, school) and you end up getting sick risking the spread of the flu.

I have had the flu once. Once is enough. I was in bed for a week and have never been more miserable. Too many people confuse seasonal ailments or stomach upsets with the flu. The flu is respitory and can lead to pneumonia. I believe my doctor when she advises me to take every precaution.

I have had 2 of them. Once when I was pregnant (he was due in Jan.) and then the following year to protect the baby. Other than that I prefer to let my body fight it. My kids don't get the flu shot either.

I have had them every year since they became available, and have only been sick once and without a fever, which I think might have been from something I ate. I was very hesitant to start as I had heard of others who said they got sick from the shot. Because I have had a susceptibility to pneumonia and respiratory illness since I was a baby, (I am a senior), I decided I should brave it and start getting the shots. Knock on wood, I have not been sick since I started the shots.

I got flu (and other shots, too) in the Army and in the civilian world never got sick.

FYI VA Clinic in Wenatchee gives flu shots to those who qualify. A year ago I got a flu shot at the VA Clinic.

Took the shot this year as suggested by my doctor, and didn't get the flu.

Didn't get a shot over the previous 15 years, and didn't get the flu then, either.

So, apparently, this means that neither getting nor not getting the shot gives you the flu. :)

If the majority of folks do get flu shots it will provide a "herd immunity" that will help protect those too cheap or too uninformed to get a flu shot. 1918 flu epidemic killed millions including my grandfather. Getting a flu shot is good thing to do for your neighbors.

I never personally bought into the "herd immunity" argument on the sole grounds that if you have your kids vaccinated, they're automatically protected from unvaccinated classmates.

It's still about choices, and on that note an interesting statistic came up showing that higher educated mothers are actually less likely to have their children vaccinated:

No, never had a flu shot and don't plan on getting one. I did get a pneumonia shot last fall in a moment of weakness. I could have done without it and the cost was ridiculous as most healthcare is nowadays. Even with insurance I pay about what healthcare should cost. All that other money is meaningless to me but it keeps the paper shufflers happy.

I think the flu shot is a great idea for people who have respiratory issues or other health issues. If you are a healthy person then I say let your body do it's job.
