I eat very little of this kind of food product anyway, and there seems to be plenty of other brands out there should I somehow acquire a craving. It's hard to imagine a world without Twinkies, but such is life. Any angst I might feel about the loss of the Hostess product line is more than offset by seeing another employer stand up to a union and emphatically express a feeling that they have been pushed too hard for the last time. If they were able to settle with the Teamsters, it doesn't appear (at least on the surface) that Hostess was the bad guy in these negotiations.
Yes . . . I'm sorry for those folks who will no longer have a job, but perhaps they have learned that solidarity and exorbitant demands are not necessarily the means to a happy ending. One thing I am quite sure of. Life will go on without Hostess, and I suspect that the facilities will be used again and the product line will surface again under another name.

Well said Jim.

There's always "Little Debbie"

where are the snowballs??

the question is Jimbo is how many other companies are going to say the heck with it and close their doors rather than bend to the union strong arm tactics? from what I have read on real news sources (not just these poll sites) id the union and employees were warned before hand what would happen. All the company sought was some reasonable wage and insurance deductions. Sad the employees at hostess opted to lose their jobs and remove an icon from our lives.

The majority so far for the choice of "NONE" restores my faith in shoppers' intelligence. Yes, in the very distant past I ate the occasional Twinkie, but then learned about unhealthy ingredients vs. healthy and imitation vs. real.

Ditto that, Joanne.

Weight is a problem for me, even though I am not a big consumer of sweets. So, it's been a long time since I had any of these.
There are several other competitors out there: Little Debbie's mentioned above, Bimbo. Another company will buy the rights to the names and I expect we will see these items again.

"Little Debbie's mentioned above, Bimbo."
Wow! I sure hope that wasn't intended to be a response to me Phil! Hahahaaaaa! I have been called many things, but this would be a first time for "Bimbo"!

Bimbo is the name of a company ...

"Bimbo is the name of a company ..."
I'm aware of that Nicole, but that's not quite what I read in snoskier's comment. "Little Debbie's mentioned above, Bimbo." doesn't really lead me to believe he was speaking of another baking company, but now that you mention the company, the comment does make more sense even if it is still not pointing out "several other competitors" as mentioned in the preceding sentence..

Sorry about the wording Jimbo. Our stores carry Little Debbie's snacks, and snacks from Bimbo, which has an extensive line of products. Several of them are very similar to Hostess items. There are also other minor snack companies out there, so I do expect we will see these Hostess brands in the future.
lonedog3 6 months ago
even something as simple this and some feel the need to resort to name calling. very sad!!

Sorry about the wording. Bimbo is a large snack company that has a extensive snack line.

Well, this isn't a new concept Joe. I think it has been building for some time. I used to do business with a lumber yard that shut down over a union agreement back in the Seventies. The Teamsters went on working for a year or more after their contract expired, and when they finally settled, the union expected the businesses to pay the increases retroactively. This guy simply said "No! We now have an agreement and I will pay the higher rates as of the contract agreement. Not one dime in retroactive compensation!" The Teamsters threatened to picket his yard if he didn't comply and he told them they would be picketing an empty yard if they did. The pickets showed up and he walked out and closed the gates, chained them shut and closed the business forever. I always thought he did EXACTLY the right thing.

Paula Poundstone is going to be VERY upset. But seriously folks, to put Interstate's problem exclusively on the back of labor ignores the fact that business trends have changed over the past number of years. For example, their very expensive in house distibution system inhailed through a straw.
I also seriously doubt if the tradenames will be off the market for too long. They're valuable properties in their own right, so I expect that the names will be purchased and re-introduced under another manufacturer's label.

My boys have never had any of it, but I bought some to throw in the freezer. Every so often(like once a year) a HoHo is really good.

I am pro union but I have to say that putting yourself out of a job is not real smart ..Always better to keep working and pray for a better days ahead .

Jimbo, in reference to the point I made above, Jon Talton had an interesting take on what killed Hostess in this morning's Seattle Times. http://seattletimes.com/html/soundeconomywithjontalton/2019696179_what_killed_hostess.html
JimboBear 6 months ago
I read that too Doug, and concur that it was not all one sided. I very much like the quote with which Mr. Talton concludes his article. It's all very indicative of the times in which we live. Everyone wishes to cast blame and no one is honest enough to accept it, and that applies to both sides of every coin.

I haven't eaten a Hostess product in many a year, but about once a decade, my husband liked to splurge on a Sno-ball (sp?), a bit of a coconut covered sugarfest, I guess. To each his own...
The recipes will be sold along with everything else at Hostess and the rest of their brands (Wonder, etc.) so I wouldn't count them out yet. Someone may very likely come along and purchase Hostess and make our world Twinkie-filled once again. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me to find out if talks with foreign investors are already in the works.

Sad situation with Hostess....some of those products are a part of the American history in the food and pop culture world. Sad!

Personally, I prefer 'Little Debbies', and 'Moon-Pies', and "Ring-Dings'. (Twinkies haven't been good for years, IMHO.)
novarama 6 months ago
The twinkie is such an iconic man made food item it seems a shame to let it just die out. I haven't paid much attention to all the doom and gloomers predicting financial cliffs and such... the end of twinkies however must mean things are worse than I thought.

long ago (1940s) i used to save up my milk money and detour to the neighborhood grocer on my way home from school to buy 2 chocolate Hostess cupcakes which i had to eat (tossing the wrapper in a residential gutter) before i got home - nothing's ever tasted better than my ill gotten chocolate cupcakes

What happened to wonder bread in this poll. Sometimes a PB&J on wonder bread just scratched the itch. Kind of a little rememberance of childhood. As far as the rest, I did not partake.
douglas 6 months ago
Wonder Bread went the way of the joy buzzer and dribble glass about 10 years ago, at least around here. With the rise of regional and house brands, it pretty much killed the national one.
its_all_lies 6 months ago
Cadillac_Man is right. Twinkies don't taste the same as they did when I was a kid. Crumb and chocolate Donettes, on the other hand.... My one Hostess weakness.
lonedog3 6 months ago
I am sure some non-union chineese company will buy them up and start selling hostess once again.
