If you were stuck on a desert island (with food, water and shelter), what would be the most important luxury?

Just give me my Kindle (now with 427 books loaded) and a small roll-up/foldable solar recharging unit. I can always create a scarecrow for a companion (hey, Tom Hanks had a volleyball, so don't laugh). I have more of a problem finding consistent quiet for reading than of needing chit-chat (Hello, bathroom, my old friend. I've come to read in you, again).

The problem with that Kindle is that titles can be remotely edited and/or deleted at the click of a mouse.
With actual books, they'd have to take them away physically.
(and that day could very well be coming)

Hmmmm...Cite? I've had one since the very beginning and that has not been an issue that I've experienced. There was an issue at the very beginning where Amazon had deleted some illegal (copyrite infringement) titles from SOME Amazon Kindles, but that issue was corrected and has not been repeated. So, while a possibility, it has not been an issue. Besides, how would Amazon do that unless you have your wireless connection 'on' (to save battery life they are generally wireless is left 'off' unless you are downloading a purchased title), and you were not in-range of cell towers?

I'm not sure this question deserves an answer. To begin with, is there such a thing as a "desert" island? I was under the impression that a desert was a very dry and arid region not some place surrounded by water. I won't embarrass the author of this question by asking when was the last time they heard of someone "stuck" on ant island from which they could not expect prompt rescue.

Bro, lighten (GOP=angry, white men...) up!
Also ants make mounds-not islands-least not islands with food, shelter, water and Sophia Loren.
And more: I was raised/"stuck" in NYC, Manhattan Island, all kinds of shelter, food and water and no one rescued me. When I got old enough I was able to flee myself...

Isn't it obvious that "ant" was a typo that I didn't notice in time to edit?
Is there something I said in that comment that leads you to believe I am a Republican or that I am angry, or even white for that matter? Sometimes I'm nearly certain that the nature and object of your comments is only to irritate others, Jim.

Actually there is such a thing as a desert island. Its dictionary definition is: "a small remote tropical island." It can also be defined as an island that is uninhabited by humans.
JimboBear 4 months, 1 week ago
Well Brandon, Dictionary.com defines desert thusly:
noun:
a region so arid because of little rainfall that it supports only sparse and widely spaced vegetation or no vegetation at all: The Sahara is a vast sandy desert. Synonyms: waste, wasteland, barren wilderness.
That hardly describes a "tropical island" and I believe you'll find that an island uninhabited by humans is a deserted island, not a desert island.
I'll give you that you will find reference to "desert islands" in fairy tales, fictional works and the movies, but I believe you'll find that "desert island" is much more a literary term than a factual place. You call it what you want, but if I want to see a desert I don't think I'm going to be looking for one in the middle of the ocean.

I think the term desert island is often confused with the term deserted island. They sound similar but have vastly different connotations. Given that the context of the poll question suggested that adequate food, water and shelter were available on this particular island, I think the implication is that it (the island) is habitable, unlike what you would expect of a desert-like environment.
Now...can we find another meaningless nit to pick?

"Now...can we find another meaningless nit to pick?"
No . . . we'll have to wait until Monday when they post another meaningless poll question. Thanks for your agreement with me though.

Of course "ant" was a typo. It was my attempt at humor-not irritation.
My, your, our comments are powerless to evoke any feelings from anyone; period. The power of perception/thinking comes from each our own specific brain-that ultimately causes our own feelings.
The way each of us specifically perceive and then think upon something will then cause us our subsequent feelings about that something.
If two or more folks can observe the exact same thing and have all kinds of different thoughts, feelings and memories of that same darn thing-then it's not that same darn thing that causes all that. It's us-each our own brain's ability to perceive/think!
As I've said herein before, too often human perception/thinking can get kinda' dark, irritable, pissed off with lack of aerobic exercise, lack of sunlight, alcohol/marijuana/opiate/benzo use.
Lighten up bro-there are more "cliffs" for us all to get over...

Hehehee, you're dating yourself. I remember sitting glued to the TV each week waiting breathlessly for my trip to the Twilight Zone.
Was there an episode about a dessert island?
