WENATCHEE — Mission Ridge’s Alec Jones won his second straight giant slalom race Sunday on his home course to capture the overall Hampton Cup trophy.
Jones had plenty of competition — from his own teammates. The Mission Ridge Ski Team claimed the top five spots and six of the top seven in the men’s race.

SANDPOINT, Idaho — Mission Ridge’s Alec Jones put together a blistering second run to win Sunday’s giant slalom on the final day of the Northwest Cup stop at Schweitzer Mountain Resort.
Jones’ combined time for his two runs was 2:10.43, including a 1:04.99 second run that vaulted him into first place over Kenny Wilson, 17, of Squaw Valley, Idaho, and Russell Ronsky, 16, of Canada.

WENATCHEE — Mission Ridge Ski Team members Alec Jones and Austin Dean have been named to the Western Elite Ski Team, the Pacific Northwest Ski Association has announced.
Joining Jones and Dean, both 17 years old, on the team are three other Northwest skiers — Anna Mounsey of Team Alpental Snoqualmie, Jordan Schweitzer of Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation, and Jacqueline Wiles of the White Pass Ski Club.

WENATCHEE — It was expected for weeks. So it came as no great surprise when two Mission Ridge Ski Team members were officially added this week to the 2012 U.S. Alpine Ski Team.
Still, it’s quite a tip-of-the-hat to the local ski program.

WENATCHEE — Longtime Mission Ridge Ski Team coach Claudia Yamamoto was named the Pacific Northwest Ski Association’s coach of the year during ceremonies Saturday evening.
Yamamoto is only the second woman to win the award in the ski association’s history. The Quincy resident has served as a coach for more than 30 years at Mission Ridge, 49 Degrees North near Spokane and at Alta, Utah. During her racing days, she competed in Northwest Cups, U.S. Nationals, Can Ams, and the Western Region Elite Spring Series.

WENATCHEE — Colby Granstrom put himself in a big hole with his first run, and could not quite climb out.
On the second-to-last day of the Wester Region Elite FIS Spring Series at Mission Ridge on Tuesday, Granstrom found himself in 11th place after the first men’s giant slalom run. He made up a bunch of time on the second run — posting the fastest time of the run by more than two-tenths of a second — but only caught nine of the 10 racers who were in front of him.

WENATCHEE — Sarah Schleper may have four Winter Olympics appearances under her belt, but the Vail, Colo., resident was still without a win in the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series over the past two years when she took to the Mission Ridge course on Monday.

A stellar second run led the Mission Ridge Ski Team member to a giant slalom victory Sunday in the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series at Mission Ridge Ski and Board Resort, just two days after she won the super-G and super combined races.

WENATCHEE — Brooke Wales has not spent a lot of time on her “home” course this season, but she looked mighty comfortable there Friday as she won both the women’s super-G and super combined races on the first day of the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series at Mission Ridge Ski and Board Resort.
“It’s very nice to be home. I’ve trained on the hill plenty,” said Wales, who grew up in Sammamish but spent most of her winters in Wenatchee and at Mission Ridge before embarking on an international career this season. “Not so much this year, but in the past, and knowing how it runs and the different terrain is extremely helpful. I’m very comfortable on it.”

WINTER PARK, Colo. — Mission Ridge Ski Team member Colby Granstrom broke up Tommy Ford’s monopoly at the U.S. championships on Sunday, winning the slalom with a fast final run in snowy conditions.
Julia Mancuso couldn’t add to her career mark of 13 U.S. titles, skiing off the course in whiteout conditions during the first run of the women’s race. She won the super-G and giant slalom earlier this week.

WENATCHEE — Clare Wise of the Mission Ridge Ski Team underwent surgery Saturday after breaking her tibia and fibula while training at the ski area, according to her father.
Wise, the valedictorian of Wenatchee High School’s Class of 2010, is expected to be out five to six months, interrupting a successful 2010-2011 season that included a win in the first Northwest Cup super G at Schweitzer, Idaho, and podium finishes in both Northwest Cup giant slalom events and in two Big Sky super G races.

WHISTLER, B.C. — Having just one team member qualify for the World Cup circuit would be quite a coup. The Mission Ridge Ski Team now has two.
Colby Granstrom and Brooke Wales each secured spots last weekend for next year’s World Cup tour, something Mission Ridge Ski Team program director Ryan Shorter said was a nearly unprecedented feather in the MRST’s cap.

WENATCHEE — The Mission Ridge Ski Team will have five skiers in the Western Region Junior Olympics from March 18-20 at Squaw Valley, Calif.
Ben Holmberg of Wenatchee, Delilah Cupp of Twisp, Fred Williams of Richland, Lindsay Ahmann of Everett, and Hannah Bodily of McCall, Idaho, all qualified by skiing well in events at Mt. Spokane and Ski Bowl in Government Camp, Ore., in January, said MRST coach Ryan Shorter.

ASPEN, Colo. — Mission Ridge Ski Team member Brooke Wales made it to the podium in a NorAm race for the first time in her career by winning the NorAm Cup Super G in Aspen on Thursday. Wales finished with a combined time of one minute, 17.67 seconds to beat second-place finisher and fellow American Julia Ford by almost eight-tenths of a second.
MISSOULA, Mont. — Over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, the new Mission Ridge Freestyle Ski Team participated in its first event ever, competed in the USSA Snowbowl Interdivisional Freestyle Event near Missoula. Mission Ridge members Joel Hanson, Nikolas Linden and Kurt Zontek competed in mogul events on Jan. 16-17, as well as a dual mogul event on Jan. 17. Hanson placed ninth and eighth in moguls in the J2 category (15- to 16-year-olds) and was eliminated in the second round of duals. Linden placed eighth and seventh in the J4 (11- to 12-year-olds) category and was eliminated in the first round of duals. Zontek placed first in both mogul events in the J5 (9- to 10-year-olds) category and was eliminated in the second round of duals.
MOUNT SPOKANE — Olympic qualifying competition is in full swing throughout the U.S., and that includes those younger athletes trying to qualify for the Junior Olympic competition coming up in mid-March.

Wenatchee’s Clare Wise races in the Western Region Junior Championships last March at Schweitzer Mountain in Idaho. Wise, a Wenatchee High School student, is one of the top racers this season on the Mission Ridge Ski Team.
