Winifred Taplett Thomas of Wenatchee recently celebrated her 102nd birthday. Taplett Thomas was born to Jacob and Adele Sargent on May 23, 1910, in Molson. She spent the majority of her childhood in Tonasket and has lived in the Wenatchee area since the 1930s.

Low-income seniors can get vouchers

Aging and Adult Care of Central Washington will distribute $40 vouchers per household to qualified, low-income seniors in the senior farmers market nutrition program, running June 4 through June 28. Vouchers can be used to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and honey from participating farmers markets in Adams, Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties.

Marriage class has advice for couples planning ahead

Nigerian pastor to visit this month

Registration open for new bilingual early learning center

WENATCHEE — The Cornerstone Early Learning Center, a new bilingual learning center, is now accepting registration for children ages 3 1/2 to 5 years old. The learning center is at Cornerstone Christian Church, 12 N. Chelan Ave. Classes begin Sept. 4.

Class in beginning Hebrew continues for four weeks

WENATCHEE — The Beit Aveinu Synagogue, a messianic congregation, has planned a four-week beginner course in learning the Hebrew language. The first lesson, taught by Rabbi Stanley Chester, runs 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. June 2 at the Wenatchee Valley Technical Skills Center, 327 E. Penny Road. Subsequent classes will be on Saturdays at the same time.

Pace to speak on Wounded Warrior Project at dinner

LEAVENWORTH — Paul Pace will be the featured speaker at the local chapter of the Military Officers’s Association of America (MOAA) dinner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wild Huckleberry Restaurant at Leavenworth Golf Course, 9101 Icicle Road. Pace is the warrior outreach coordinator for the Wounded Warrior Project in the Pacific Northwest.

Poppy Days drives set for this weekend

NCW — The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 10 of Wenatchee will hold a Poppy Day drive Friday and Saturday. Cashmere American Legion Auxiliary No. 64’s volunteers will collect donations Friday. American Legion volunteers will collect donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Alberstons grocery store, 1128 N. Miller St., Safeway grocery store, 501 N. Miller St., and Wal-Mart, 2000 N. Barbecue to celebrate Armed Forces Day

WENATCHEE — The community is invited to honor service members and their families during a free Armed Forces Day barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Rotary Park, 1810 Maple St. The event will include catered barbecue from Country Boys BBQ in Cashmere, face painting, a bouncy house and a raffle for service members and their families.

Medicinal and edible plant walk set for Saturday

WINTHROP — The Methow Conservancy has planned a medicinal and edible plant walk at 9 a.m. Saturday in Winthrop. Rosalee de la Foret, a clinical herbalist and ethnobotanist, and Mary Kiesau, a Methow Conservancy staff naturalist, will lead the walk.

Nacho feed to benefit World War II veterans

OROVILLE — Justin Peterson, a sixth-grader at Jenkins Middle School in Chewelah, invites the community to a nacho feed from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eagles Arie, 1319 Golden St. in Oroville. Monetary donations will be accepted at the event. Proceeds will benefit the Inland Northwest’s World War II veterans so they may visit a memorial built in their honor in Washington, D.C.

NCW — The Wenatchee River Salmon Festival has selected a winner for the 2012 Nancy Durfee Natural Resource Scholarship. Lisa Garrigues, a Naches Valley High School senior, was recently awarded the $1,500 scholarship to continue education in a natural resource field.

WENATCHEE — The Beta Sigma Phi chapters of Wenatchee recently celebrated their 80th year at their annual Founder’s Day banquet last month at Inna’s Restaurant. During the celebration, each chapter announced its women of the year. Winners were Sharon Erickson, Xi Alpha Rho; Glenda DeVore, Laureate Gamma Alpha; and Kathleen Ryan, Beta Gamma Masters.

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Public Library, 310 Douglas St., will host a free Early Learning Family Literacy Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Plans include a bilingual storyteller, literacy activities, a puzzle station, face painting and a visit from “Cat in the Hat.”

Cookie is a shepherd and Labrador retriever mix, say officials at the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society. She is 12 months old and weighs about 55 pounds. Cookie is very confident and loves to lean in for petting and attention. She would benefit from some additional obedience training. Cookie is learning to walk on a leash and is good around children and other dogs. She loves to play fetch and tug-of-war. Cookie is spayed, up to date with routine shots and prefers a home without other dogs.
