TACOMA — Wenatchee’s Isaiah Brandt-Sims took the first step in repeating as Class 4A 100 and 200-meter champion on Friday by winning his preliminary heat of the 100 meters in comfortable fashion. The Panther sophomore clocked a 10.60, the best time in either heat.

Omak’s Lewis 2nd, WHS’ Takasugi slides
Day 2 of the state golf tournaments was kind to Omak’s Ryder Lewis, but not to Wenatchee’s Jordan Takasugi. Lewis improved by a stroke in the final round Wednesday and tied for second in the 1A boys tournament at The Home Course in Dupont, but Takasugi struggled on the back nine in the 4A girls tournament at Spokane’s MeadowWood and settled for a tie for 28th.

Takasugi rebounds to make finals
SPOKANE — One bad hole in the 4A girls golf state tournament Tuesday had Wenatchee’s Jordan Takasugi doubting her chances of making Wednesday’s final round. But instead of panicking, Takasugi recalled something for last week’s district tournament. “I honestly thought after that hole I was done, but I remember a girl at districts that shot nine on a hole and still shot in the 70s, so I had to keep fighting,” she said.
Wild issue 14 tenders
WENATCHEE — Just over three weeks since the Wenatchee Wild’s 2011-12 season came to an end and their coach resigned, the Wild made the first step towards putting the 2012-13 team together by issuing 14 tenders on Monday. The Wild, who have yet to announce a replacement for former head coach John Becanic, issued nine tenders to forwards to help replace the scoring punch of centers Shawn Pauly and Ben Carey, both of whom scored over 100 points for the team.
Rams dominate semifinals
EAST WENATCHEE — The Okanogan Valley Commandos gave the Wenatchee Valley Rams the biggest scare of their undefeated run through the Washington Football League schedule this season. In Saturday’s WFL Semifinals, it was a much different story than that one-point nail-biter.

Spokane at the Apple Bowl, setting up a semifinal date with Mercer Island at 3 p.m. Friday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup and ensuring the program’s first-ever top-four finish.

State soccer: Cascade out, Chelan to semis
LEAVENWORTH — The Cascade boys soccer team certainly encountered its share of adversity this season, but through it all, the Kodiaks managed to persevere because of one overriding thought: They believed that they had a legitimate chance at winning a state championship, and nothing — not the sudden death of a beloved coach, or playing on the road and practicing indoors for the first three weeks of the season due to snow — could take that away from them. That’s why the Kodiaks’ shootout loss to Royal on Wednesday in a first-round 1A state playoff game stung them so badly. All season long, head coach Pete Spiegel told his players to emphasize positives instead of dwelling on negatives, and he attempted to do just that after the contest was over.

Rams are league champs
SPOKANE — Even without the star quarterback that led them to an undefeated record in league play, the Wenatchee Valley Rams proved they are the class of the Washington Football League. While the Kamiakin girls ran away with victories in 13 of the 17 events to score 266 points and claim the district title, the Brave boys benefitted from relay wins and depth in the distance races to claim the championship with 158.5 points.

Beat Grizz, advance to regional title game

District track: EHS boys in title mix
WHS heads to 4A meet at Pasco
EAST WENATCHEE — Three teams have a legitimate shot at the Big Nine 3A boys track and field district championship at Wildcat Stadium on Friday, and Eastmont hopes the home-field advantage will factor into the final tally. “There really isn’t a clear leader,” said Eastmont coach Gary Millard, whose team figures to challenge league champ Hanford and second-place Kamiakin for the district title. “If we had been healthy with Lucas (high jumper Lucas McGill) and Dylan (distance runner Dylan Guilmette), we could have tied for the league title. We just need some things to happen the right way.”

Preps: Cascade soccer wins CTL title
LEAVENWORTH —It’s been a whirlwind season for the Cascade boys soccer team. In the Kodiaks’ first season since longtime coach Colin Powers died of a heart attack, they didn’t even get to play on their own snow-covered field until mid-April. But once the weather warmed up, so did Cascade — all the way through Thursday’s regular-season finale, a 5-1 victory over Cashmere that clinched its first Caribou Trail League championship in five years.
Wild sidetracked by injuries, bad news in playoffs

EHS girls third, boys fifth in home POD
ROCK ISLAND — The Rock Island Golf Course saw its first action as the home to a Big Nine POD match on Monday, and the results were mixed for the hosting Eastmont Wildcats. On the one hand, the course and its year-old second nine holes proved to be a worthy candidate for more Big Nine matches. But on the other hand, the home-course advantage was nearly nonexistent for Eastmont, which ended up struggling with steady winds on its way to third- and fifth-place finishes for the girls and boys, respectively.
Rams roll in non-league win
EAST WENATCHEE — Quarterback Matt Sligar helped the Wenatchee Valley Rams to a 47-6 win over the Washington Cavaliers at Wildcat Stadium on Saturday, but the veteran signal-caller will be in a very different environment when the Rams hit the field again in two weeks. Sligar, who was the starting quarterback on the Rams’ 2009 championship team, is headed to a cod- and salmon-fishing boat in Alaska this week, effectively ended his football season.
Knights sweep in Oregon
ONTARIO, Ore. — The NWAACC East Division-leading Wenatchee Valley College Knights needed just 10 innings to sweep a doubleheader against Blue Mountain on Sunday. Sweep leaves doors open for ’Cats
EAST WENATCHEE — With just six games left on the Eastmont baseball team’s Big Nine 3A schedule, plenty of doors are still open for the Wildcats — especially after their twinbill sweep of the Pasco Bulldogs on Friday. With wins of 5-3 and 12-2 at Dan White Field, the Wildcats improved to 7-5 in the Big Nine, keeping them in the running for a top three seed to the postseason, which would ensure them at least one home playoff game.
