East Wenatchee traffic tangles to ease by Thursday

EAST WENATCHEE — Work to rebuild two key intersections in the heart of commercial East Wenatchee will wrap up by Thursday and, with them, most of detours and traffic tangles that have exasperated motorists. Newly minted in fresh concrete, the intersection at Valley Mall Parkway and Grant Road should open by 6 a.m. Tuesday, Kevin Waligorski, project manager for the state Department of Transportation said this morning.

Woodcutter snags power line, kills electricity overnight at Lake Wenatchee

A contractor working to clear downed trees snagged a Chelan County PUD power line near Lake Wenatchee State Park Wednesday and pulled down a utility pole, knocking out power for much of the night along the lake’s south shore.

Chelan County towns move away from sheriff’s contracts

WENATCHEE — Cashmere and Leavenworth moved this week to end their contractual relationship with the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, citing the rising costs of buying law enforcement for their citizens. Cashmere Mayor Jeff Gomes said the city council there voted Monday night to draft a letter informing Chelan County commissioners and Sheriff Brian Burnett that the town would not renew its contract for 2014. Leavenworth followed suit with an identical council vote on Tuesday.

Jail workers get new labor contract

Chelan County commissioners Monday approved a 3-year retroactive labor contract that gives jail custody officers and supervisors a 2-percent wage increase this year.

Summit of Badger Mountain Road to close for paving

The summit of Badger Mountain Road will close Monday through late fall, while crews repair and pave the route’s 2.34-mile “McGinnis Canyon” stretch, Douglas County Engineer Doug Bramlette said in a news release Wednesday.

Feds clear Pangborn for longer runway

EAST WENATCHEE — The feds have given their long-awaited final approval and funding for a $30 million project to lengthen the runway at Pangborn Memorial Airport. The project will improve the reliability of existing flights at Pangborn, which need more room to take off and land during temperature and weather extremes, Trent Moyers, airport manager, said this morning. It will also make the airport more appealing to other airlines that fly regional jets, he said.

TED-like talks to focus on tech in education

WENATCHEE — Teachers, school administrators, former students and community leaders will discuss their ideas of integrating technology in the classroom in a local version of TED Talks May 23 at the Confluence Technology Center in Olds Station. The 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. event includes an hour open house before and after the talks, which are scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

The camp is hosting a clean-up day May 18. More than 100 volunteers are needed for everything from dragging brush and heavy labor to washing windows, prepping cabins, making lunch for volunteers. “There’s a job for almost anybody” Camp Fire NCW director Theresa Samuelsen says.
