WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee athletics program tapped into the college ranks in its search for a new girls soccer coach. Katie Fox, who led the program at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore. last season, will take over the Panther program this fall.

EAST WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Merchants 10-under girls fastpitch softball team recently took sceond place in the Summer Heat tournament in Moses Lake. “It’s our first trophy in our young history,” Merchants coach Erik Vasquez said.

EAST WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley Rams will play in their third Washington Football League championship game in as many seasons on Saturday, and if the Rams are going to be crowned champions for the second time in that span, they’re going to have to do something they have failed to do in two previous tries this year: Beat the Okanogan Commandos. While both regular-season games were close, both went to the Commandos, who prevailed 18-14 in Okanogan in early April and 21-17 in East Wenatchee in early May.

BREMERTON — Nine holes in, Nick Ellis was two under par and near the top of the leader board. But things slowly got away from Ellis after that, as the Eastmont High School and Washington State University grad failed to qualify for the U.S. Open.

YAKIMA — Eastmont’s Ian Sagdal and Brewster’s Stockton Taylor have both been picked to play in the All-State Baseball Series this weekend in Yakima. Four teams will play Saturday and Sunday in Yakima. Sagdal and Taylor have both been assigned to Team Rainier, which will take on Team St. Helens at 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Team Adams will meet Team Baker at noon Saturday. The third-place game is 10:25 a.m. Sunday, followed by the championship at 1:35 p.m.

WINTHROP — For the first time in the organization’s history, the Methow Valley Sport Trails Association is looking for a new executive director. The new director will replace Jay Lucas, who has served in that role for the past 30 years.

WENATCHEE — The Tri-Cities Fever are going on to the playoffs, while the Wenatchee Valley Venom are going back to the drawing board. The Venom’s second season came to a close with a 58-52 loss the Fever on Saturday in a game that saw the Venom fall behind early, then have a furious rally fall just short in the final seconds.

WENATCHEE — Chris Rumble spent two seasons in Wenatchee trying to become the best hockey player he could be. But if his hockey career doesn’t pan out, Wenatchee could still be remembered as the place he launched a different path in his life. The Wild defenseman spent the 2010-11 season collecting behind-the-scenes video and audio for a 90-minute documentary called “Into the Ice,” an insider’s look at the world of junior hockey.

TACOMA — The Wenatchee boys track and field team is on target to reach Panther coach Bob Bullis’ expectations through two days of competition at the Class 4A state championships at Mount Tahoma Stadium. Isaiah Brandt-Sims had the best qualifying time in the 200-meter preliminary heats, clocking a 21.77, and Nicholas Boersma had a similarly relaxing heat in the 800.

YAKIMA — Fifteen runs is usually enough to win several softball games, let alone a single one. But it wasn’t enough for Brewster to avoid elimination at the state Class 2B softball tournament Friday. After losing their first tournament game 13-2 to Mossyrock, the Bears put 15 on the board against LaConner in their second game, only to fall short in a 16-15 season-ending loss.

EAST WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley Association of the United States Bowling Congress held its annual awards social earlier this month, and a number of individuals and teams were honored. Goodman misses game
WENATCHEE — The status of Wenatchee Valley wide receiver Phil Goodman, the team’s franchise player, is apparently in question after he was not in the arena on Saturday night. Smith confirmed Goodman’s absence, but would not comment on why he wasn’t there, or whether he was still on the team. “I only want to comment on the guys that were here,” he said. When asked whether Goodman would be in uniform when the Venom travel to face this same Seattle team next Saturday, Smith alluded to the uncertainty of Goodman’s status. “I’ll let you know when I’ve made a decision,” he said. —Brian Adamowsky, World staff
Chelan pulls upset, headed to state
PESHASTIN — Just one Caribou Trail League team is going to state, and it’s not the one most people expected. After both Cascade and Chelan lost in the semifinals, the Goats beat the Kodiaks 9-8 in an elimination game for the third state berth from the bi-district.

WENATCHEE — The Garfield Bulldogs controlled possession and dominated the face-off spot all game, and a Wenatchee Valley comeback fell short as the Seattle squad knocked Wenatchee Valley out of the Division II boys lacrosse state tournament with an 8-6 win in a rainy quarterfinal at Hollis Field. Wenatchee Valley trailed by five goals entering the fourth quarter when its offense finally came to life with consecutive goals by Rawley Holmberg and Caden Stockwell, making the score 7-4 with 3:28 remaining.

EAST WENATCHEE — Bellevue Christian starting pitcher Jo Jo Howie was supposed to be on a strict pitch count Saturday. Cashmere wishes the Vikings had stuck to that plan. Instead Howie tossed a complete-game gem in Class 1A first-round state tournament play Saturday, and the Vikings squeaked past the defending state champion Bulldogs 1-0.

EAST WENATCHEE — On most days, Eastmont athletic director Dan White would have been cheering for Cashmere. But when the Bulldogs played at the Eastmont baseball field that’s named after him Saturday, White was rooting for the other guys. That’s because Bellevue Christian is coached by Brian Potoshnik, who played at Eastmont for White, the longtime Wildcats coach in the late 1980s.

EAST WENATCHEE — A pair of golfers knocked in holes-in-one on back-to-back days at the Highlander Golf Course this week. On Thursday, Robert Walls scored his first-ever ace on the 100-yard, par-3 17th hole using a gap wedge. The feat was witnessed by Ralph Archer.

EAST WENATCHE —NorthWest Modifieds make their 2011 Wenatchee Valley’s Super Oval debut on Saturday night, while the Thunder Cars, Pure Stocks and Youth Hornets classes return to action for the first time since opening night. That night, the top two Thunder Cars drivers from 2010, Russell Kain and Trucker Moore, were in familiar positions. Both won heat races, and they then finished one-two in the feature race. Defending Pure Stocks champ Michelle Kennedy was sixth in her 2011 debut.

The Bulldogs overcame their first real adversity all season last weekend — they won a pair of one-run games to secure the No. 1 seed from their bi-district tournament to state — and just four games now stand between them and a state chamionship repeat.

Wildcats win 2OT thriller: Header propels Cats into quarterfinals vs. Southridge
PASCO — No matter how many times the Eastmont Wildcats face elimination, they won’t go away. Hernán Mendoza headed Mauricio Perez’s corner kick into the net in the second overtime to lead Eastmont to a 1-0 victory over Pasco in a Class 3A state tournament opener Tuesday night, giving the Wildcats their fourth straight victory in a loser-out situation.

WENATCHEE — A pair of Wenatchee Wild veterans, as well as six other tendered players, were selected in the United States Hockey League draft Monday. Jacob Barber, who scored 34 goals in 59 games with Wenatchee and Alaska last season, was taken by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders with the last pick of the first round, 15th overall.

LEAVENWORTH — It took a little longer than they expected, but the Cascade fastpitch softball team is the champion of District Six. The District 6 1A tournament was originally set for Saturday in Chelan, but heavy rains washed those games to Tuesday in Leavenworth, where Cascade rolled to a pair of easy wins.

Panther girls junior third at Three Lakes
EAST WENATCHEE — Jordan Takasugi is headed back to state after qualifying with plenty of room to spare Monday. Takasugi shot an 86 in Class 4A district touranment play Tuesday at Three Lakes Golf Course, good for third place overall. Richland’s Kristin Strankman won with a 76, with Chiawana’s Kelsey Merrill taking the eighth and final state berth with a 95.
Wenatchee boys take title, grab four spots for regionals
YAKIMA — Getting two singles players through to regionals was expected. Having two doubles teams join them was an unexpected bonus. Wenatchee won the district title and grabbed four of six slots Monday for the 4A tennis regional tournament it is hosting Saturday. The second day of the district tournament included an all-Wenatchee final in singles, and Panthers doubles teams taking second and third.

WENATCHEE — Before the start of Saturday afternoon’s race, George Velazquez and Jim Heinlein put their heads together and came up with a plan. The Wenatchee cyclists discussed at length the maneuvers and strategies that would lead them to victory in the Men’s Masters 3 category of the Ted Finegold Memorial Criterium. Then they decided it wouldn’t possibly work out the way they hoped.

WV Masters swimmers strike gold in Arizona
WENATCHEE — Wenatchee Valley Masters swimmers Peony Munger and Jack Bevier both recently hit gold at the Short Course Masters National Championships in Mesa, Ariz. Both were national champions in the 200 butterfly in the 75-79 age group, and Munger also won the 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley. She was also third in the 200 backstroke and fourth in the 200 breaststroke. Bevier finished third in the 100 butterfly and 1,650 freestyle, fourth in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 50 butterfly and 200 freestyle.

WENATCHEE — In his three years in the Wenatchee Valley Junior Velo Club, Josh Mandoli’s parents have driven all over the state to bring him to races and watch him compete. But his mom won’t be watching every move he makes when Mandoli rides Saturday in the criterium leg of the Wenatchee Omnium.
