Teen was stabbed, strangled
WENATCHEE — Mackenzie Cowell died from “manual strangulation and stab wound to the neck,” according to the death certificate signed after her autopsy. “Blunt impact to the head” also significantly contributed to her death, the certificate said. It notes that the time interval between the homicidal violence and death was “brief.”
Cowell case still a mystery
WENATCHEE — On Saturday, it will be a month since the body of 17-year-old Wenatchee High School student Mackenzie Cowell was found at Crescent Bar. Investigators say they have no suspects.
Police looking for person who stole thousands from Red Lion ATM
WENATCHEE — In what Wenatchee police are calling “a pretty gutsy move,” someone punched a hole in an ATM machine earlier this week at the Red Lion Hotel and stole several thousand dollars. The twist: The ATM never left the building.
Leavenworth deputy fire chief finds bomb near station
LEAVENWORTH — At first, Bill Horner didn’t think the device was a bomb. It had a metal smoking pipe attached to it “so I thought it looked like somebody had dropped their stash,” said Horner, deputy chief of Fire District 3 in Leavenworth.
Man says seven assailants attack him in his home
EAST WENATCHEE — An 18-year-old East Wenatchee man says he was assaulted in his home Tuesday afternoon by seven men who accused him of stealing puppies. The incident happened about 1:40 p.m. in the 1100 block of Southeast Carolyn Street, said Don Culp, Douglas County undersheriff. The victim said he was talking with some of the men at the front door when others entered the house through a rear door. He said he ran to the bathroom and locked himself inside, but the men kicked the door open and pulled him out. The victim stated that he was punched twice in the mouth and struck in the back with a baseball bat. Culp said the man was not seriously hurt.
Reward fund for Cowell hits $6,700
WENATCHEE — A reward fund set up for the Mackenzie Cowell homicide case has brought in $6,700, organizers say. They ended their efforts with $1,537 raised at a fundraising event at Caffè Mela on Saturday, said Terri Morris of Wenatchee.
Forecast calls for snow tonight, Thursday
WENATCHEE — Don’t put the snow boots away just yet. One to 2 inches of snow are possible tonight and Thursday in the Wenatchee area, according to the National Weather Service. The low temperature tonight will be about 26 degrees with a chance of precipitation at 60 percent, forecasters state. The snow on Thursday is expected to fall before 10 a.m., then temperatures will warm up with highs about 38 degrees. The chance of precipitation on Thursday is 70 percent.
Belligerent man arrested for threatening grocery clerk
WENATCHEE — Police responded in force to Albertsons grocery store Tuesday evening and arrested a man who threatened to shoot a store clerk if employees didn’t sell him beer. Police determined that the man was unarmed but, during the altercation, he threw a ham at a store employee, said Sgt. Cherie Smith, a Wenatchee Police Department spokesman.
Eastside high-speed pursuit ends in injuries
One man, 18, arrested
EAST WENATCHEE — A high-speed chase through East Wenatchee streets Monday night ended with a short foot pursuit and two 18-year-olds suffering from road rash. Treated at Central Washington Hospital were motorcycle driver Cameron M. Darnell and passenger Madison T. Miller, according to a Washington State Patrol report.
One arrested two weeks after bar fight
WENATCHEE — A 23-year-old Wenatchee man was arrested Monday night on suspicion of second-degree assault, accused of injuring another Wenatchee man Feb. 22 at Sharx Bar & Bites. He is accused of hitting Charles Wagner, 34, over the head with a pool cue. Wagner’s father, John Wagner, said last month that his son was at Central Washington Hospital for more than two days because of head injuries and a broken arm. In February, police said Wagner’s arm was broken when another man assaulted him. That man is still at large, said police spokesman Guy Miner.
