Fire sweeps shed
Fire destroys a large metal shop about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon on Bainard Road in Malaga. Capt. Cary Neu from Chelan County Fire District 1 estimated the damage to the Russell Carlson’s building and contents — including a boat, camper and truck — at about $110,000. The cause is under investigation.

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley grew by 28 United States citizens Tuesday night as people from four countries finished their long journeys to citizenship by taking the Oath of Allegiance during the Naturalization Ceremony at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center. Keynote speaker Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett talked about the new citizens’ courage during the process of immigrating and becoming citizens in the hourlong program.

Volunteers help people take out a basket of Thanksgiving food from the Wenatchee Assembly of God church Tuesday evening. More than 400 baskets of food are being given away as part of the seventh year of the Baskets of Blessings program sponsored by Serve Wenatchee Valley.
Woman rescued from teetering car after 20 minutes
CASHMERE — Amanda Shaver was driving home after dropping off her boyfriend at work this morning when she lost control of her car and went over the embankment just west of the Cottage Avenue Bridge in Cashmere. No one saw her leave the Highway 2/97 and when her car came to rest, it was teetering on the steep riverbank. “I was afraid to lean, open the door, or do anything,” the 22-year-old Wenatchee woman said. “I seriously thought I was going into the river.”

People launch leftover Halloween pumpkins with a device made by Dan Douglas, East Wenatchee, at Trinity United Methodist Church Saturday during an annual cider press. This is the fourth and final year for the launcher said Douglas, who has plans to make a new one next year that will be easier to pull back on. About 40 pumpkins were sent through the air to a compost pile 70 feet away, most coming up short or going beyond. Douglas says he’ll have to be careful building his new one so the pumpkins won’t travel onto neighboring Northeast Eighth Street.

The Ephrata Landfill is the only one in the state licensed to use discarded latex paint mix as a cover, avoiding having to put a six-inch cover of dirt or rocks over the daily layer of garbage.

LEAVENWORTH — Children look at wild fish in an 8,000-gallon aquarium at the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival on the opening day Thursday for elementary school-age kids at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. The festival runs through Sunday and is open to the public for the weekend. In its fourth year at the festival, the tank is supplied with wild fish from local rivers — except for the hatchery trout.

Home threatened in Douglas County fire
EAST WENATCHEE — An outbuilding and a home along the Columbia River were threatened Thursday morning when dry grass caught fire at 229 Turtlerock Road. Douglas County Fire District 2 answered the 11 a.m. call and contained the blaze to about half an acre, said Capt. Jeff Stephens. He said no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire is not yet determined, he said. — K.C. Mehaffey, World staff

The Canyon B Bridge under construction in East Wenatchee, just east of Sunset Highway, now completely spans the canyon. Workers with Cascade Bridge will spend the coming weeks tying rebar to form the skeleton of the bridge deck.
