Root rot takes down sick firs and their healthy-looking neighbors

Lake Wenatchee State Park still closed

LAKE WENATCHEE — Dan Omdal delivered a grave prognosis Saturday for the trees of Lake Wenatchee State Park, and the forest itself seemed to punctuate it. Washington State Parks evacuated the 489-acre Lake Wenatchee tract on Wednesday, after finding evidence of aggressive root rot in many of its trees. Worried for park users’ safety from falling trees, officials shut the area to camping and hiking and began removing those conifers deemed ill or in danger of disease.

EAST WENATCHEE — Firefighters expected to contain a large brush fire on Badger Mountain by the middle of this afternoon. The fire never threatened any structures and burned only grassland, said Doug Miller, fire marshal for Douglas County Fire District 2. He did not have an estimate of acreage burned.

WENATCHEE — It’s all about unloading history. Robert and Barb Scoville of Entiat had laid out box after box of compact discs, a medium that’s given way to the digital download. Bill Cass of East Wenatchee arrayed tableloads of farm implements, furniture and antique glass bottles from his family estate in Tonasket — the kind of stuff they just don’t make anymore.

The Worm: ‘Strange Days,’ sightings from NCW

In NCW, you’re probably more likely to encounter a Sasquatch than a celebrity. Now Paul Graves of Wenatchee has done both. Standup comic and former “Full House” star Bob Saget embarks on a new TV project with his A&E reality show “Strange Days,” due to premiere on the cable channel sometime this year. The show features Saget immersing himself in “different unusual cultures from the world of mail-order brides to joining a survivalist cult prepping for the end of the world to rushing a fraternity,” according to A&E.
