In the PAC, a group of co-workers, family, friends and 300 students from John Newbery Elementary, where Ferrell teaches, were assembled by Macy’s so the company could film footage for the “big reveal” of the Macy’s Million Dollar Challenge. Members of the media were asked to leave the taping and a Macy’s representative said the winner will be announced Tuesday.

WENATCHEE — On Saturday, winds are expected to be 5 to 10 mph in the Wenatchee Valley, according to the National Weather Service. But at night gusts could reach 20 mph as sustained wind speeds pick up.

Kenroy students start a garden

EAST WENATCHEE — Kenroy Elementary School’s AmeriCorp volunteer Lahlani Skipper, student specialist Chrisy Clay and Kenroy teachers raised money and planned and constructed raised beds for a garden at the school. Every student painted rocks and older students helped plant the seed-starts in the raised bed.

Minor injuries in Peshastin Creek crash

Dawne Fidecaro of Cashmere looks at the damage on a 2000 Dodge Durango that she said her mother was riding in. Fidecaro did not provide the name of her mother. Lt. Kandi Patrick, a spokesman for the State Patrol, said a passenger of the Durango suffered minor injuries about 5 p.m. Thursday when the car ran off Highway 97 and landed partly in Peshastin Creek. The accident happened about five miles south of the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 2. Details about the accident were not available.

Spring greening

WENATCHEE — Warmer temperatures Monday meant the sounds of lawnmowers echoed across the Wenatchee Valley. On Monday afternoon, Roger Mills mowed the lawn at the Golder home on Easy Street just west of School Street in Wenatchee. Mills works for the Golders.

Art history

The Eastmont High School art club, lead by Terry Valdez, along with artist, Jan Cook Mack, paint a historical depiction of the settling of the Wenatchee Valley in the hallway of Rock Island Elementary School Sunday afternoon. Included in the mural are David Thompson and Chief Moses, as well as local area wildlife, waterways and plant life.

Paddling to adventure

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club hosted a paddle camp for fourth- and fifth-grade students this past week. The students learned about canoeing and kayaking, and the natural habitats along the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers. Fourth- and fifth-graders will participate in the David Thompson Paddle in June.

Crunch-up

Sgt. Stephyne Silvestre of the Wenatchee Police Department examines a car that ended up in the bushes in the triangle at Ninth and Miller streets after a two-car collision. The crash happened about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday. It involved cars driven by Herbert Diede, 50, of Wenatchee, and Earl Lyon, 40, of Ellensburg.

Fire destroy shop, vehicles in Cashmere

CASHMERE — Fire heavily damaged a metal shop building at 916 Pioneer Ave. in Cashmere late Friday afternoon, said Cashmere Fire Chief Rob Sweigard. Three cars and a boat were destroyed. Sweigard said an initial investigation determined the cause was an overloaded electrical outlet. No one was injured.

About 20 women auditioned Thursday night at Pioneer Middle School to be members of the Venom Girls dance team. The women learned a routine that they will have to practice and perfect for Saturday’s final tryout.

Group walks for a cause

A group of local residents gathered Saturday to raise money for military families. Called the Barefoot Hike for Heroes, the group walked one mile around the Eastmont Junior High School track. Though the event was listed as barefoot, the walkers wore shoes.

Santa Claus has come to town

The McEdwards were just a couple of the kids who had their photo taken with Santa Thursday evening. East Wenatchee’s tree-lighting ceremony was followed by pictures with Santa at City Hall.

Wenatchee Downtown Association holds Open House & Wine Walk this weekend

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Downtown Association will host its annual Holiday Downtown Open House & Wine Walk on Saturday. The Wine Walk started at noon at Davis Furniture and continues until 5 p.m. Several downtown businesses are participating. The cost is $25 for 15 tastes.

If approved, local taxpayers would provide $30.8 million for repair and remodeling at Eastmont High, Sterling Intermediate and Grant Elementary schools. The new bond would increase taxes 50 to 56 cents per thousand of assessed valuation, or about $112 a year for a $200,000 home.

Vue Dale Drive-In goes out with a bite

For the final showing at the Vue Dale Drive-In Sunday night, “Machete” and “The Expendables” played on Screen 1 and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Vampires Suck” played on Screen 2. It was the last night of operation for the two-screen Wenatchee icon, closing after 57 years of outdoor movies.

Competitors duke it out Saturday for Nuestra Belleza title

Competitors practiced their performances Tuesday in preparation for the Nuestra Belleza Latina NCW comeptition. The pageant will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Wenatchee High School auditorium, which is where the rehearsal was held Tuesday.

Second-graders learn about ‘Aweseome Apples’ at tree fruit center

A second-grade class from Lincoln Elementary School visited the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center on Western Avenue in Wenatchee on Wednesday morning. It was the 10th year second-graders have participated in the two-day “Awesome Apple Adventures” event at the center.

Officials from Douglas, Chelan counties join together for training excercise

WENATCHEE — “Help! Help! Please, Mom! They’re aliens! They’re trying to abduct me!” Dave Shanley cried Wednesday morning as he flailed his arms and legs, and struggled to get off the backboard he was lying on. Of course, they weren’t aliens. They were members of a hazmat team set up in a mass decontamination tent and they were trying to help. Their hazmat suits gave them the other-worldly appearance, but Shanley was acting a bit as well — playing the part of someone exposed to chemicals and hallucinating.

CASHMERE — Three guinea hens were wandering around the area of Yaksum Canyon Road and crossing the road several times on Thursday morning. A resident of Yaksum Canyon near Cashmere has the guinea hens to keep pests such as ticks and snakes at bay.
